Introducing: The Nomadic Kim Churchill

Australian-born but bound to no country, Kim Churchill is as much of a traveller as one can be.

The singer-songwriter has lived on the road for more than 8 years, and his songs reflect all that he has seen during that time. The music is his way of “pushing the boundaries of traditional releases whilst taking inspiration from his nomadic lifestyle.”

Kim is releasing his EP I am on 3rd May 2019. He worked with Berlin house and hip-hop producer Vincent Kotkamp to create the EP, and it will be the first of four to be released.

We had the chance to ask him a couple questions…

You’re quite into travelling… tell us about your favourite place you’ve visited?

It’s hard to pick! Honestly I think I’m normally the most pumped on the place I was last/currently. Which, right now is Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. This place is magical and the waves are insane! The garden route I drove over the last few days is a magical drive as well. The whole coast is just lined up with beautiful little coves glowing in clear autumn light. It’s very dreamy. 

You were on the road for 8 years, what is the best part about visiting other places?

For me I think it’s the freshness of the lifestyle. Everything is always changing and its always exciting. At the same time, you move quickly, so you’re constantly leaving places wishing you had more time and being totally in love. I guess it can be kind of a cheeky check out for from reality, but it’s one I really love.

What does music mean to you?

For me, music is a method of expressing my soul through a medium that others have the opportunity to interpret and potentially see a part of themselves in, and this serves as a therapy for all involved. 

What was it like filming in Berlin and working with Vincent Kottkamp?

Beautiful! It was full blown Berlin summer weather! We stayed on the edge of the stunning Grunewald Forest and would swim and film and walk through it every day. We ran much deeper in the city in Friedrichshain and Neukolln and marvelled at the graffiti and packed pubs and bars, full of people watching the FIFA World Cup.

Working with Vince was another world entirely! His studio was behind a mechanic and overflowing with young, hopeful producers trying to break into the electronic and hip-hop scenes. They were all taking turns in the different rooms and sleeping on couches at the studio and just working so god damn hard every day. It was an inspiring place and Vince is a shining light in there and a masterful young producer. I was so inspired by everything about him and his skills as a producer. Each moment had magic in it.

What are you most looking forward to in 2019?

I really don’t know! In many ways I feel like I’m at the beginning of a mysterious new chapter of my life and I’m very optimistic about it all, but have chosen to really throw myself into the unknown. Not knowing what’s coming is perfect for me right now though. I’m very much enjoying the unknown. 

What has been the biggest influence on your musical career?

My mum and dad probably. They’ve helped me take the biggest leaps. They’ve given me the room to be myself and pursue things in my own way and they’ve always been the most incredible sounding board for any challenges I’ve had in my life. I wouldn’t be anywhere without them.
