Introducing the Young and Powerful Ruti

19 year-old singer-songwriter Ruti comes from Essex, England and packs all things emotion and powerful vocals into her music.

In 2018, the young artist won The Voice UK, with the prize being a contract with Polydor Records.

You’re only 19 years old… what advice would you offer other young musicians that are just starting out?

I would say take every opportunity you can to perform, however big or small the gig. Of course you don’t have to say yes to everything and overwhelm yourself! Start to get your name out there, maybe start social media accounts as artist so people can follow your journey. Try reaching out to other musicians that are starting out as well and collaborate,
networking is super important! A lot of networking can happen at gigs too.

Describe your personality in 3 words…

Optimistic, nervous, adventurous (yes, I think you can be nervous and adventurous at the same time)

What is your favourite aspect about making music?

That’s a difficult question, because I absolutely love working in the studio – whether it’s on my own or with people. But equally I love performing, especially now with my own music! And with my band it is just so much fun! I get the chance to feel connected with my songs, which I think also connects the audience. I think live music has a different effect on people.

Who are your inspirations, musically or otherwise?

My musical inspirations would be  Ella Fitzgerald   Laura Mvula . They are both incredible women in music! I love the way that Ella just glides along the melody and when she scats it takes the song in a whole other direction. I am in awe of Laura’s compositions and her melodies – it’s always unexpected. But there are so many other musicians that inspire me!

Who is your dream collaboration?

At the moment my dream collaboration would be with Bastille.

What is one thing you couldn’t live without?

A flannel shirt

How do you want to be remembered?

Someone that stayed grounded and had the ability to connect with her audiences and make them feel like they were part of the songs she sang.
