The Scottish singer-songwriter fell in love with music at a young age, finding solace and inspiration from his father’s record collection. With learning from some of music’s biggest icons and receiving his own guitar Beattie’s love for his craft continued to grow and evolve to what it is today. Since making his debut in 2017 with his EP We Are Stars, Beattie is continuing to create music that everyone could relate to.
Fresh off the release of his new track Without You the emerging artist is continuing to show the world what he’s made of.
We got a chance to chat with Callum Beattie about his new intimate track, the hardest part of songwriting and so much more…
Your new single Without You is an absolute dream, can you give us a background on how the track came to be?
I had finished a really intense couple of weeks recording and I think my producer was feeling pretty tired. He was definitely a tad grumpy at least. I suggested we just experiment with someone completely new, something fresh on the ears, and literally within about 3 hours Without You was born.
What is the lyrical meaning behind the song? Did you have a person in mind while writing it?
Yeah it’s a super personal song for me. I had just recently ended a decade long relationship and it’s was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. The song touches on my mental health and how one day I’d feel optimistic about the future and the weight of the world was off my shoulders. Then the next day I’d feel completely down and terrible about the whole thing. I think I’ve managed to capture a really honest heartbreaking subject in a slightly comical way, which I love.
What is the hardest and easiest part of writing songs?
Hardest part that it never just happens when you want it too.
The easiest part is picking up the guitar and putting it in your lap.
Without You is your second single release of 2019, what are your plans for the rest of the year in terms of your music?
I plan to release as much music as I can! And also release my debut album before the end of the year.
You’ve performed at some music’s biggest festivals like Glastonbury, The Great Escape and BST Hyde Park, what was it like performing at these legendary events?
Unbelievable I feel totally grateful to even be given the opportunities. Glastonbury was a very special moment for me.
When did you realized that you wanted to pursue music?
My first job when I left school was a trolley boy in a supermarket. The day I pushed my first trolley around the car park. That was the day I thought. Na that’s quite enough of that thank you.
Are there any artists that inspire your music and sound?
Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen, Bowie, stereophonics, Mgmt the list goes on…
If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be and why?
I’d love to collaborate with Dua Lipa because I really fancy her and think we would sound and ‘look’ amazing together.
