Meet Duo *repeat repeat
Following up their 2017 debut album ‘Floral Canyon’,Jared and Kristyn Corder of *repeat repeat are back with their sticky-sweet new record ‘Glazed’! The album is packed full of feel good tracks that showcase’s the bands impressive harmonies and infectious lyrics.
The formation of *repeat repeat started off without Kristyn. But after Jared teamed up with producer Gregory Lattimer, Kristin entered the band as full fledge member and the rest is history. The Nashville band quickly started making music, and created their signature sound. Now with two albums under their belt and a spot on the upcoming ‘Let’s Rock’ tour with the Black Keys and Modest Mouse this fall their upward trajectory show’s no signs of stopping.
We had a chance to chat with *repeat repeat about everything from the their new album Glazed, their sound and more…
Can you go into the creative process for the new album?
Making Glazed was different than anything we’ve ever made before. In the past I (Jared) had always written the skeleton of the song and arrangements. Then Kristyn would layer in harmonies and melody ideas. With Glazed, Patrick wanted to basically start from scratch and write the whole record together in-studio in real time. The three of us (Kristyn, Patrick and myself) spent 20, 12 hour days writing and recording the record together. There were even moments (like in “Woke With You”) where we were almost done completely with the song and we ended up redoing the lyrics and arraignment on one of the very last days of recording. It was a whirlwind but it made us better musicians and songwriters.
Which song on the record was the most challenging to create?
Probably “I Could Hear My Heart Beating”. Originally it was called “We Live In A Monarchy” and was a politically charged song about the patriarchy…. we thought we could get away with that. Patrick told us to write from our hearts, and write what we know. What we know best is love and relationships and trying to hold close to love in a fucked up world. That’s what we know best. We ended up scratching the initially idea. Patrick sent us the writings of Raymond Carver and told us to write a love song in the style of his writings. Simple, straight forward but poetic.
How does Glazed differ from your 2017 debut Floral Canyon?
So many ways. How we made it, how quickly we released it comparatively (We shopped Floral Canyon for 2 years), and also the overall amount of input we had on this album, even down to the artwork. Kristyn was the creative director, and we the artwork was also crafted by hand (even down to mixing and pouring the Glaze for the albums cover)
What do you hope fans take away from the album after listening?
That we’re growing, and that we’re not stopping. We hope that fans will evolve with us on this record and come to love these songs as much as we do. People are just now discovering our old songs, so its exciting to think about where these songs will live years from now.
Can you give us the backstory on the creation of *repeat repeat? When did you guys form the group?
I started the band about 5 years ago. I spent the first year really just piecing together the right band and working on songs behind the scenes so that I could come out the gate swinging. Kristyn and I were engaged while I was starting the band, and I had auditioned several girl singers (and had Kristyns input during the whole process). In the end I had her sing on a few demos and our producer at the time (Gregory Lattimer) heard the demos and was like “I think you’ve found your girl singer”
If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be and why?
Beck probably. I think he’s brilliant. Kristyn would say Alvvays. Honestly getting to work with Patrick felt like we had already won the jackpot so it’s hard to think of anyone else.
Whats an average song writing session like for you two?
I will write a verse and chorus on guitar. Show it to Kristyn. If she likes it in the beginning we start writing more of it together. I try to not get too deep into a song until it’s time to go into the studio, because I don’t want to get too married to any parts and ruin the magic that happens on the spot.
Are there any plans for touring soon?
We are currently right in the middle of it! We’ve been on the road all summer since May. No stopping for us until 2020. You can catch us this fall with The Black Keys and Modest Mouse on the “Let’s Rock” tour too.
