Introducing One Bit
If you love dance music, then One Bit is the producer/writer duo that needs to be on your radar. The multi-instrumentals have steadily gained critical praise for their tracks “My Way” and “Between You and Me.” Along with producing and releasing their own music, the duo has lent their writing and producing skills to some the UK’s biggest acts including the likes of Stormzy and Dan Caplen. With their singles dominating the charts and racking in a total of 40 million streams on Spotify, One Bit shows no signs of stopping their dance-music takeover.
We got to chat with the guys about their origin, creative process, and more…
How did One Bit come together?
We’d been working together for a few years, mainly recording bands and producing artists, and it just felt like a natural progression to put our name to a project that we could have complete control over. It all came together pretty organically, we’re not sure we even had a discussion about musical direction, we just started writing things and putting them online! From there it’s just slowly morphed and progressed into what it is now.
When it comes to creating music, do you two have a routine on who does what?
We generally don’t like to be too fixed in terms of routine as you never really know where you’re going to find inspiration. We love to collaborate with other writers and artists so that often keeps things fresh and exciting by snapping you out of any routines that you would tend to fall into otherwise. That being said, as an unwritten rule during the writing process Joe is more hands on, on the computer side of things (chords and drums) and Jonty on the lyrics / melodies but it’s very subjective dependant on what we’re doing. As soon as its written and we start focusing on production it’s very much an all hands on deck with a few synths and two computers on the go at once!
Which instrument do you two love playing the most?
Joe: I fucking love playing the drums! It just happens to be the most antisocial instrument to play – especially living in London when everyone lives on top of each other… So I’m definitely one of those annoying people who no one wants to sit next to cos I’m drumming on something haha
Jonty: For me it’s probably Cello, It’s not every day that it makes its way onto a record but when it does I think it’s just got a great way of conveying emotion that’s pretty difficult to match in a virtual way.
Your track Back To You is a bop, how did the link up with Laura White come to be?
It was the second time we’d worked with Laura and the last session in our old studio before we packed it all up and moved into London… We’d started playing around with the N-joi sample before the session and knew there was something pretty special in it. When Laura arrived the first thing she said was about a concept idea of ‘everything leads back to you’ and within a few hours the track was most of what it is today – it’s actually the demo vocals from that session that went on the final record too… Laura’s such an unbelievable singer, there’s not many people that can sing a song from start to finish for the first time and for everyone to agree that it’s the final vocal!! (in total think we only ever recorded three takes!)

What has it been like to work with some of music’s biggest talents?
To be honest it’s easy to forget that the person you’re working with has a grammy or a number 1 or is actually super famous. As soon as you start chatting & get in the studio you quickly realise that everyone is just a nice, normal person underneath it all so it doesn’t really feel any different. The main difference comes when a track gets released, your phone goes fucking crazy – all social media has to be muted or your phone won’t stop from all the notifications!!
Who would be your dream collaboration?
We wouldn’t say no to a Calvin Harris collab. He’s definitely been a big inspiration & is insanely consistent at putting out bangers. We’re also hoping if we say this enough in interviews it might just happen… (DM us @onebitmusic if you’re reading mate
You guys have amassed over 75 million global streams (AMAZING), how does that make you guys feel?
Odd! Haha You definitely have to kick yourself occasionally to allow yourself to take in some of the milestones, but it’s worth mentioning that at least 70 Million of them are almost certainly gonna be our mums
Is there an album or EP in the works? What can fans expect?
We have an unbelievable amount of music that we’ve made for One Bit over the past few years so at some point we’re definitely gonna get a body of work out in some form… But for now expect a new single near the end of 2019, a bunch of new remixes and a lot of ridiculous photos on Instagram
