Meet DIY Pop Band Capulets
If you’re looking for a new band to stan, then pop-trio Capulets are for you! In terms of their music union, the three best friends recall an organic formation – with Sarah and Florrie starting out as songwriters at record label and production house Xenomania. After growing close over time, the two eventually met producer Toby Scott, sparking an instant connection. Since then, the trio has been hard at work creating music that represents their professional relationship and friendship. Debuting with Act One – a collection of future-pop tracks that create a cinematic listening experience – the band has set the tone with their sound and artistry. With their new single Stranger Love making the rounds and even more new music on the way Capulets are showing no signs of slowing down!
We got a chance to chat with the band about everything from their band name, their debut EP, and so much more…
How did you three come together to form Capulets?
Sarah and Florrie wrote together a lot, as songwriters for other people. At some point we started writing for us in sessions, just for fun. We loved it and spoke to Toby ‘The Synth’ Scott about coming to join us, and we started experimenting with some vintage analog chords and it all meshed together really well… and then Capulets were born. We still have a video of us dancing around the spare bedroom to the first song we ever wrote, we were so excited.
What’s the origin behind the name?
There’s two girls and one guy in the band. Let’s face it, if we have to pick a side, it’s gonna be Juliet’s. Not that it will ever come down to that. Toby’s all for equality.
What type of sound do you guys tend to lean towards while making music?
We like to think we’ve got our own thing going on and try not to lean too far in any direction. And There are influences from 80s synth bands like Depeche Mode and New Order, but keeping the production style more modern.When we all come together to write, it’s quite a freeing process. We all love lots of different types of music but we are united by love for memorable songs that stay with you – so we aim to try and make songs that do this! So far there has always been some emotive synths and a great beat from ‘Flozzy Osbourne’.
Is there a genre that you three are curious to explore?
Sarah’s incredible vocal prowess enables us to try lots of things… maybe one day we’ll find ourselves writing a Happy Hardcore/Screamo hybrid.
Your debut EP is fantastic. What was the creative process behind the making of the record?
We did a lot of dancing around rooms. Usually Florrie and Sarah get their heads down and create some lyrical concepts and melodies over chords, then bring them to Toby and we have a thrash about with some beats, sounds and structures All of the songs come from personal experience. Florrie and Sarah took kick boxing lessons at a community centre once. It was a strange period in our lives. Everyone there seemed to feel, like us, a little bit odd. Kickboxing ended up being so much fun and a place where we could all come together each week, be ourselves and kick the shit out of a giant bag. And that’s how we ended up writing Community Centre!
The visual for Annie is stunning. What were some of the themes you want viewers to take away from the video?
We want people to watch it and think ‘oh, its okay not to be okay’ or ‘oh, people write songs about people who don’t have their shit together’. Everyone feels like they are surrounded sometimes, but there is ALWAYS some one who will listen…and then you can take them on to a balcony and let go of a few balloons together.
Will you be releasing more music this year? Another EP or album?
Yes we bloody will! Very soon! Act Two is already written.
What are your top five goals you three want to achieve as a band?
1. Sarah would like to win Ru Pauls Drag Race and hopes the band will support her in her dream.
2. Play Glastonbury (We’ve already planned the set)
3. Get so big we can put a billboard near our exes houses (again, this is maybe just a Sarah dream)
4. Buy Toby all the synths he could ever dream of
5. Get Florrie the most banging drum kit she could ever bang
