Meet The Compassionate Aaron Smith
Aaron Smith is an emerging artist that will pull at your heartstrings with his intimate music. Born and raised in Scotland, the singer-songwriter first got his start by learning the guitar. He continued to foster his passion for music at school, writing songs and tinkering with the music department’s studio. Fast forward to 2019 and Smith has released his first single ‘Unspoken’ a track about the miscommunication and roadblocks that come in a relationship. Following up the success of his first single, the rising artist released his emotionally charged EP Loveless – opening his mind and heart to audiences everywhere. With his video for his single Better Than You Loved Me and debut EP making the rounds, Aaron Smith is proving to be a vocal force that needs to be on everyone’s radar!
We were able to chat with him about his intimate new track Better Than You Loved Me, dream venue to perform, and so much more…
Better Than You Loved Me is an emotionally heavy track, what inspired the record? Was it challenging to write?
It definitely was a challenge to write but felt like a bit of a special moment when it was all coming together. BTYLM is inspired by a tough time in my life, it’s quite a heavy topic and not really something I speak about – it’s nice to have written this song to express those feelings.
The video for the single is pretty intense as well; what was your creative vision for the visual?
I wanted the video to be quite striking and intense. It’s such a harsh topic to work around but it’s important and has to be spoken about. When I was working on the visuals for the track and had decided on the storyline I decided to work from the aspect of the woman in the relationship being the abuser – I think when you hear about domestic abuse everyone always assumes that it’s a man that’s being abusive and that isn’t always the case
Will you be making any more videos for the record?
Probably not for this record no. Well not an official music video anyway but working on some other little visual things here and there for the other tracks. Hopefully have some of those out very soon.
Do you find it difficult writing about topics that are intimate or personal?
I’m quite an emotional person so writing is actually a really good release for that, it’s good to get all the stuff I’m feeling down on paper and make it in to a song. I do find it difficult sometimes bringing up some topics that maybe make me feel vulnerable but I think it’s worth doing.
All the tracks on Loveless are fantastic, can you take us into the creative process for the EP?
Thank you! I’ve been writing quite intensely for about a year and a half now and just working away on loads of tracks and trying to find what I wanted my sound to be. Eventually I took a break from writing and sat down with my management and listened through everything – from there we worked out what songs sit well together and what would be a good introduction to me as an artist and we put together Loveless from that.
Who inspired you to pursue music professionally?
My mum. She was always the one who inspired me to push working on music as hard as I could and always wanted me to do my best. Sadly she is no longer with us so now everything I do is for her.
Do you have a dream venue or event that you would love to perform?
I think it would have to be the Hydro in Glasgow, to play a show that size to a Scottish crowd is definitely a dream of mine.
What type of impact do you want to have with your music?
I like for people to relate their own stories to the songs I write. If I can write a song and it helps someone with something they are going through even though the song might mean something completely different to me then I’ve achieved what I set out to do with songwriting. I love getting messages from people saying how they can relate to my songs and how they’ve helped them through things they have been struggling with. It’s a bit of a mental feeling.
