Meet The Grammy Nominated RÜFÜS DU SOL
RÜFÜS DU SOL is a group that is taking the electronic music world by storm. Made up of members Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George, and James Hunt, the Sydney natives first debuted in 2011 with their Rufus EP. In 2013 the trio released their debut album ATLAS which skyrocketed to the number one spot on the Australia charts. After a brief break, the group dropped their sophomore record Bloom, which also hit the number one spot solidifying their status as a global powerhouse. From amassing over 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify to recently being nominated for two Grammys – for their third album Solace and single Underwater – the guys of RÜFÜS DU SOL are showing no signs of stopping their music domination.
We got to chat with them about their creative process in the studio, the influence of California on their music, and more…
What’s a typical recording session like for you three? Do you each set a specific goal to achieve?
We write and record at the same time. We are actually about to write new music again for the next 6 weeks. It’s the first real time we are stepping into a studio together since finishing Solace 14 months ago. So we’re probably going to approach it a little differently for the sake of challenging ourselves. We each take turns in the drivers seat, and we each contribute to whatever writing comes to us. A lot of our breakthrough moments have happened away from the computer while jamming on different synths together, more tactile writing with instruments is how we like to come up with the ideas at the moment.
Out of your catalogue of music, which track is your favourite?
They all have different feeling and meanings for us. We probably have different favourites the 3 of us, but for the purpose of answering this question, I’d say, Underwater, Innerbloom, Another Life and Solace are songs that have a lot of personal significance for us.
You have three successful albums – including 2 number 1 platinum albums. How has your music changed since your debut?
We’ve changed as people and as artists, so our songwriting has changed. A lot has changed in the seven years since we wrote Atlas, to us personally and in the greater context of electronic music. We aren’t trying to write the same records and feelings as we were seven years ago. We were asked once in an interview if we thought there was an Innerbloom part 2 on our 3rd record Solace. It’s a peculiar question because, we aren’t trying to write anything part 2. The entertainment industry loves to rehash the same ideas again and again and milk them till they are dry. From our point of view, we already went there and explored that feeling once, so we’re trying to explore a different feeling the next time we step into the studio. That’s exciting for us.
Has your recent move to LA inspired you guys creatively?
We moved to California a few years ago now. It was the right shake up that we needed at the time in order to start exploring new sides of our writing, it was a new city with a huge communication of musicians and this incredible expansive desert on one side and the ocean on the other. We’ve been away from LA on tour for pretty much a year. Just wrapped it up. So it’s going to be nice to reconnect with our homes.
What’s your favourite part of touring around the world?
When we come off stage and all look at each other knowing that the crowd got it and we made some peoples nights, and hopefully made some new fans.
A remixed version of your third album titled ‘Solace Remixed’ dropped in September. Will we be getting more new music soon?
Time will tell. We have ideas. We are inspired. We are about to start writing.
