Unfiltered, intense, and authentic are three ways to describe emerging artist Dax. Hailing from Ottawa Canada, the young MC started out as a college basketball star and part-time janitor. It wasn’t long before his music career took off with his debut in 2017. Since then, he has steadily gained a dedicated following with the release of his first EP, singles like ‘She Cheated Again’, ‘Dear God’, and collaboration with rapper Emiway on ‘I Been That’. With unapologetic lyrical content and thought-provoking visuals, Dax is expertly carving his own path in hip-hop.
We got the chance to talk to the rising artist about everything from the imagery and meaning behind his visuals Dear God, the type of impact he wants his music to have, and so much more…
‘Dear God’ is a passionate and introspective track. When you were writing the song, what key points did you want to get across?
What I wanted to get across is that, although I had all these questions I was still a believer. That’s why I started and ended with stating that. It was to let people know it’s ok to have questions and that they’re not alone in the way they feel.
Can you go into the imagery and meaning of the video for ‘Dear God’
The cross represented burdens that come along with being a believer while the guards represented societal judgment. As the video progresses I grow further from both eventually ending with it just being me, almost to say I’m letting go. It’s the journey of a believer.
Each one of your tracks is like a story. What’s an average writing session like for you?
I don’t really do writing sessions. I usually just get in the studio and put the beat on and keep rapping until I find something I like. Every now and then, if the song if serious enough, I’ll take my time and maybe write lyrics down outside of the studio. I just play the beat in some headphones and keep repeating till I get the words I want.
What type of impact do you want your music to have?
I want my music to be the voice of dreamers. I want it to be what motivates people to create someone out of nothing, and then inspire them to take that something and turn it into everything. I want to be the music they decide to play while they chase their dreams.

When did you fall in love with Hip-Hop?
I officially fell in love with HipHop the first time I recorded a song and was able to listen to myself on repeat. That was about 3 and a half years ago now.
Is there an artist that influences your musicality?
Not consciously but, being human, I’m probably influenced whether I know it or not.
You are currently on tour, can you give a sneak peek of what people can expect?
People can expect an unbelievable amount of energy and interaction. I love meeting everyone and taking pictures, and just talking with the people who fuck with me.
Are you working on a new EP or Album?
Yes. The next project is ready. I’m currently in the process of just filming a music video for every single song on it. Should be coming out early to mid 2020.
