The Soulful Lucky Daye Is R&B’s Newest Rising Star
Lucky Daye is an emerging artist, unlike any other. Creating material with a unique and soulful sound, the singer-songwriter is a breath of fresh air for the R&B genre.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Lucky has gone through his fair share of ups and downs – from growing up in a religious cult with his mother to relocating to Texas due to Hurricane Katrina. Even though Lucky Daye’s journey hasn’t always been a walk in the park, the emerging artist didn’t let it affect his dream of pursuing music. Making a move to Atlanta, Lucky began to work on his craft. After spending some time writing and recording, he took the next step and went on a road trip to LA – meeting up with producer and songwriter D’Mile. The two hit the ground running, creating Lucky’s album Painted in the process.
The powerful record discusses his journey to self-discovery, relationships, and overall life experience that shaped him into the Lucky Daye we know today. From standouts like ‘Love You Too Much’, ‘Roll Some Mo‘, and ‘Real Games’, it comes as no surprise that his debut record has recently been nominated for four Grammys – including Best R&B Album. With big plans for 2020, we can’t wait to see what else this rising star has up his sleeve.

How did you come up with the name Lucky Daye?
Well, I came up with the name Lucky Daye because I wanted to be ready for any possibility of success there would be. Lucky is when preparation meets opportunity and day is every day, and the “e” was inspired by Marvin Gaye.
When did you fall in love with R&B music?
I never knew genres. I just liked music, and I fell in love with music. When I heard music from Sisqo, Lauryn Hill, and Tyrese and watch Whitney Houston sing, it made me fall in love. Faith Evans, Tamia, Keyshia Cole, Mary J, they all made me fall in love with R&B.
Your debut album Painted is a fantastic body of work! What was the creative process like for the record?
The process was tedious because I had to travel so far with no money to meet with the only producer that believed me as an artist, DMile, and it felt like I didn’t have a choice but to do something and honestly, I didn’t think about anyone else. My whole approach was to do what they told me I couldn’t do.

Emo. Colorful. Depth. Honest.
Which track on the album was your favorite to create?
‘Paint It‘. Because we played with the vocals and sounds.
The video for Love You Too Much is stunning. What were some of the major themes you wanted fans to take away after watching?
I wanted them to take away the fact that love and anger and pain and sex all go together.
Your sound seems to have a mix of vintage and modern R&B styles. Is there an artist or era of music that has influenced you creatively?
I kind of took from everywhere. The 80s, 90s, all inspired me. I didn’t go to a specific era, I just pulled from everything.
Will you be touring soon? What can fans expect from your show?
I’m currently on tour with Khalid in Australia. You can expect something new every time.
