Meet Emerging DJ And Producer Franky Wah
If you’re a lover of all things, dance music than emerging artist Franky Wah is for you. Based in Yorkshire, the DJ and producer first got his start in during his teen years – experimenting with his first software and decks. Working tirelessly on his craft, the rising artist made his 2017 debut with his energy-filled tracks ‘House Party’ and ‘Opramus’.
Franky continued with the momentum, and over the last two years has dropped and an array of EP’s and singles – catching the attention of BBC Radio 1 Djs Annie Mac, Pete Tong, and Danny Howard in the process. With his fan base growing across the UK and his latest single ‘Time After Time’ with Jessie Ware making the rounds, its safe to say that Franky Wah has no plans of slowing down.

When did you start learning how to DJ and produce?
I bought my first software and decks at secondary school – I would have been around 14/15 at the time. I still have the decks now, but back then, it was all about hip hop. I wanted to be Scott Storch so badly, ha.
Do you remember your first gig as a DJ?
Yes, how can I forget! It was actually a warm-up set for Skream. I knew the promoter and told him I’d played a load of shows before, and thankfully he gave me my shot. The nerves were unreal, and I remember thinking about this famous Richard Branson quote – “if someone offers you an amazing opportunity, but you are not sure if you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later”.
Was there an artist or producer that inspired you?
There are so many artists and producers I take influence from, but if I had to name a few, it would be Scott Storch, who gave me the initial bug. Then I took a lot of time away from music for work commitments and life in general. Around five years FKJ inspired me to start making music again, which is crazy as I don’t make music like either of the two names above.
With music leaning towards a more genre-free environment, how would you describe your sound?
This is a very good but hard question to answer. In a nutshell – melodic house and techno with a hint of trance and breaks :/
Your single ‘Time After Time’, is such a dreamy banger! What was the creative process for the record?
Thank you – the production process felt extremely natural. I built some solid drums, and the bassline basically fell on my lap. All the other elements after that just fell into place – then we spent the day in the studio together tweaking the lyrics and recording the vocals. If only all sessions could be that easy.
How did the link up with Jessie Ware happen? Did you have her in mind during the making of this track?
The vocals were actually sent to me by my label – Jessie is such an incredible talent, so when the opportunity came to work with her, I jumped at it.
Will you be releasing an EP or album soon?
Next up is a single release, and then there is a very strong chance of an album, which would be a dream come true. For me, it’s definitely the best way for me to showcase consistency and what I’m trying to say with my music.
If you could collaborate with any artist in 2020, who would it be?
Ohhhh, do I have to name just one?! Right now, at the top of my list would have to be Kölsch, Tale Of Us, Sasha, and Rufus Du Sol.
