Feng Suave is back in 2020 with their first single in two years, and soon they’ll be at the top of your favorite playlists. The duo hail from the Netherlands, but their masterful blend of soul, psychedelic pop, and everything in between has international appeal. Their new single ‘Toking, Dozing’ comes ahead of their EP ‘Warping Youth,’ which is set to release this summer.
We got to chat with Feng Suave about their new EP, ‘Toking, Dozing’, early music memories and so much more…
It’s been three years since the last time you guys released an EP –What kind of growth or change can we expect to see with ‘Warping Youth’?
Musically, we’ve taken a more organic approach to this EP. We wanted to get the hell out of our computers and make it more live-band sounding. Luckily we’ve got an amazing group of friends who all play their instruments really well, with whom we’ve tried out our ideas. Lyrically, it’s more introspective and reflective.
What’s one of your favorite music-related memories?
Being on tour with our friends mostly, sleeping in isolated cabins in Sweden or swimming in Swiss lakes on our way to shows. Or just having a grand old time in the van. I remember one time when we first dropped Sink Into The Floor we got 30,000 plays overnight on Spotify. We lost our minds.
You’ve described ‘Toking, Dozing’ as being something like a confession. What inspired you to go in this direction lyrically?
I’m not really sure if it’s a confession to be honest. It’s more of a lyrical ‘yawn’ if you will. The song for us is about the conflict between caring for your own mental and physical health, whilst still being attentive to the bigger picture and caring about the wider world, but sometimes you’ve gotta just let those problems recede into the distance and say “I’m just toking, dozing man, you can’t touch me. I’ve forgot about you already”
What was it like to receive praise from Iggy Pop back in 2018?
That was pretty cool. Iggy Pop is a legendary gentleman and we’re honoured he played our song on the radio.
You’ve got a lot of traveling planned for your 2020. Is there any one country or place you’re particularly excited to hit on tour?
MEXICO!! Yeah baby, we can’t wait for our shows over there. We’ve never played outside of Europe before so it’ll be spectacular.
How did you guys come up with the name ‘Warping Youth’ for your EP?
Well it’s both a generational observation and a personal feeling. When you’re coming of age, some of the things that you were able to find refuge in as a child or teenager just start to fade a little bit, and it might feel like the world around you is warping and changing. Also, as a generation, we’re going to be facing some pretty unprecedented shit in our lifetimes so we’re warping that way too.

If you could pull any one artist, living or dead, to collaborate with, who would it be?
George Martin! He’s actually more of a producer but also a very talented classical musician. Easy.
What kind of environment do you picture your fans listening to your upcoming EP in?
In bed at night or in the car in the rain.
