Meet The Dream-Pop Songstress VÉRITÉ
Vérité’s intimate album ‘new skin’ isn’t your average album about love. After a long period of workshopping different songs and trying her hand at a few different collaborations, the American singer is back with her second record. The result is a work with a fresh perspective, getting real about what it means to be in a long, committed relationship. With her introspective lyrics and dreamy vocals, Vérité has a unique sound that makes her one to watch.
We were able to chat with the songstress about everything from her name, new album, her creative process and more!
Let’s take it back a bit. What made you choose the name Vérité?
Honestly, it was a self-imposed deadline. I knew I wanted a one-syllable moniker and just committed to the name fully after a day of trying different names out.
What’s your earliest music-related memory?
The earliest is when I realized I could sing and that not everyone could. I was young, maybe first or second grade? And I was picked to sing a super high solo in a school play.
You’ve said that your new album ‘New Skin’ is about being in the middle. Can you talk a bit more about what ‘the middle’ means to you?
The middle is mundane and messy. It’s a strange place to exist and a place I have always found myself living in. It lacks the charge of a beginning or an end, but there is so much beauty in settling into that place and finding meaning in that part of existence.
Do you find it challenging to write about the less glamorous parts of life as you’ve done on this album?
Not really. It’s just a reflection of who and what I actually am versus who people think I am when I’m not playing out the persona I want people to see me as on social media. I write about my experiences in the world, and I feel like I see the world in these very small moments that I love to hyper analyze.
Your music has this really fantastic, dreamy quality to it. How have you gone about developing your sound over the years?
Trail and error. Lots of failing. Lots of falling short. The only way to evolve is to take risks and push outside your comfort zone. This record stretched my abilities, and the music I’m now making is stretching me even further. That’s always the goal.
All of the songs on ‘New Skin’ are personal and specific to your life. Is there a particular song or lyric that you’re most proud of or means the most to you?
Lately, I’m most proud of “I hope you fuck her with your eyes closed and think of me.” That lyric is so direct and has zero pretenses. It is everything I aspire to be.
‘Amnesia’ is such a beautiful song to close out the album. What was the process like in creating it?
Amnesia took us so long to produce out. I feel like Zach Nicita (who produced it with me), and I were stabbing in the dark for so long, and I kept changing my mind on the overall direction. It was kind of a rock song at one point? Where we ended felt like a full circle from the start of the album, and the idea was to get lost in the track a bit like you’re forgetting where you are or where you’ve been.
You’re lined up to open for Wrabel next month. What are you most looking forward to for this upcoming year?
I’m so looking forward to touring. I’m looking forward to playing acoustic, which is a rarity for me. My US tour is right after the EU dates, so I’m fully ready for that as well. Other than touring, I’m writing and already onto the next, so I can’t wait to start sharing this next project.
