Introducing The Dynamic Swedish-Import LOVA

Words Spindle

LOVA is an emerging pop songstress that proudly wears her heart on her sleeve. As a child she spent her free time immersed in different genres of music. Between listening to passionate opera arias, early disco, and pop to learning piano from her father and writing her own songs, there wasn’t a musical stone unturned in the singer’s life. Lova continued to hone her craft over the years, eventually leading her to audition for the Lilla Melodifestivalen – which are the televised auditions to compete in the world-renowned Junior Eurovision.

The experience was life-changing for the songstress, officially setting her down the path to pursue music. Since then, LOVA has released two EP’s, earned 14 million streams – and counting– and nabbed nominations for Best New Artist at the 2019 P3 Guld Awards. With her new single ‘Own Worst Enemy’ Lova is proving to be a pop star in the making.

We were able to chat with LOVA about everything from her latest single, who she’d want to write a song for, and so much more…

Absolutely in love with your latest track, ‘Own Worst Enemy’, it’s such a fun and relatable Record! How did this song come to be?

Thank you so much! I wrote this song at a writing-camp in Oslo last year, and it was honestly such an easy and fun session. I had been wanting to write a song about my “good-girl syndrome” for a while, and as soon as I met the guys in the studio, I knew that we would create something really personal and raw but also fun, quirky and around that concept. I love how you can hear that we had a lot of fun while writing this song.

Which five artists were consistently played in your household as a kid?

Hmm good question. I can’t seem to remember five specific artists that we listened to but some songs that were a huge part of my childhood were: “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” by Whitney Houston, “La Cosa Mas Bella” by Eros Ramazzotti, “These Words” by Natasha Bedingfield (Fave song of all time) and “What’s In It For Me” by Amy Diamond was such a tune, still is!!! We also listened a lot to Jackson 5 and Earth, Wind & Fire!

Do you know how to play any instruments?

I used to play both piano and guitar for seven years when I was younger, but I have completely lost the ability to play now, which is so sad. It’s crazy how quickly you forget when you stop for a while. But I’ve promised myself to start playing again cause it would be the coolest thing if I could play my own songs when I’m on tour in the future.

You competed in the Lilla Melodifestivalen competition back in 2011. What did you learn from that experience?

I learned that music can make a difference and inspire and connect people all over the world. I learned that my voice matters and that lyrics matter. Speaking your truth is such a powerful thing to do. I also realized that I wanted to be an artist more than anything in the world.

Your music exudes such a positive and optimistic energy. How would you describe your sound?

Thank you. I’m glad you feel like that because that’s exactly how I want my music to make you feel. I would describe my sound as playful and quirky with honest and critical lyrics, talking about personal experiences and feelings, but also a lot about today’s society. And then I always like to add a little bit of sass to my songs.

Write, Record, or Take: Which artist would you want to write a song for? Which would you want to record a song with? And if you could take a popular record from an artist as your own, which would it be?

Wow, what a fun question!! There are so many, but someone I would love to write for right now is The Weeknd. I’ve always loved him, but I’m especially a fan of his recent stuff!! I would love to do a song with Bazzi cause I’m obsessed with everything he does at the moment. And take… this is definitely the hardest one cause there are so many amazing songs out there. But probably “Dancing On My Own” by Robyn or “These Words” by Natasha Bedingfield OR “I’m So Tired” by Lauv & Troye Sivan, hahaha there are too many to choose from.

Will you be releasing more new music soon? An album or EP, perhaps?

YES!!! I’m always working on new music! There’s one more song coming before summer, which I’m super excited about. I think that not a lot of people will expect a song like this from me so I can’t wait to hear what people think. It’s a proper ballad!! & yes, I’m working on an album that hopefully will come out later this year.

What has been your daily quarantine routine?

Haha I’ve been really lazy, to be honest. There are still not a lot of sessions happening at the moment, so I’ve been focusing on finishing my album and going through all my songs that I’ve collected over the past years. Besides that, I try to go out for walks everyday since it’s finally spring here in Stockholm and then spend a lot of time cooking, which is a huge passion of mine. I also love ending my day with a bath sometimes and maybe a glass of red wine to treat myself. And before going to bed, I watch ‘Money Heist’, which I just started watching and am obsessed with.

Looking ahead, what are three goals you want to achieve as an artist?

Three goals I have are to headline Coachella, to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart & I really wanna work with FINNEAS.
