Meet The Charismatic Singer-Songwriter… Tom Gregory
Tom Gregory is an emerging artist that’s destined for pop stardom. Born and raised in the seaside town of Blackpool, the rising talent always knew music was his destiny. His journey in music has been anything but uneventful. From competing on The Voice UK, acting in a BBC series, and playing in an indie band, Tom has worked tirelessly to achieve his dream. Signed to a record label in Germany, the singer-songwriter, has been able to capture music listeners everywhere with his impressive vocals and passionate lyrics. With his new track ‘Never Let Me Down,’ and his debut album set to be released this Autumn, Tom Gregory is proving to be a musical force to be reckoned with.
We were able to chat with Tom about everything from his childhood influences, his track ‘Fingertips’ and so much more…
Let’s take it back a bit, When you think back to your childhood in Blackpool, what music or artist comes to mind? Was there an artist or album that inspired you to pursue music?
I used to listen to my dad’s CD and record collection, which contained a lot of bands like Keane, Travis, and then more country acoustic stuff like James Taylor. I think Travis and Keane have to be two of the biggest musical inspirations for me!
Before releasing your fantastic track ‘Run To You’ in 2017, you dabbled in a few other ventures like acting and playing in an indie band. How have those two experiences helped you as an artist?
I think honestly, the dynamic of a band and writing really taught me what good and bad songs were. I wrote so much when I was younger, and I think this really helped me to develop my songwriting and knowing where not go.
You’re signed to a record label in Hamburg. Did you experience any culture shock when you first got signed? What differences have you noticed between the German and UK music industries?
In terms of culture shock, I think German people are definitely more organised and punctual! The beer has definitely helped me to settle in over the years, though! They make it a lot better than we do over there! I think that in terms of industry differences, the German labels are maybe a lot more patient and long term in their visions on how to develop an artist. You see it so often nowadays that artists get dropped when the first few releases don’t connect as well as expected. I don’t think this is just a problem with solely the music business though, society is so fixated on quick success.
Absolutely in love with your latest track, ‘Fingertips’! From the outside looking in, the track sounds like a traditional love song, but I hear that’s not the case? Can you give us some insight into the record? Who or what inspired the song?
I always try to think of a more complicated answer to this question…! The record is simply about my love for the guitar, but described metaphorically as a girl!
Will you be releasing more new music soon? An album or EP? Are there any details you can give us about your upcoming material?
I’ll be releasing a few more singles this year, and then in Autumn, we plan to release my debut album, which I have called “Heaven in a world so cold.”
How are you keeping busy during this time of quarantine? Do you find yourself writing and creating more?
I’ve actually set up a home studio to keep me from going crazy! I’m doing a lot of online writing sessions, and that’s keeping me super occupied at the moment! I’ve also started ideas for my second album.
If you could self-isolate with any artist and make a collaborative album, who would it be and why?
I’d have to go for the obvious and say, Ed Sheeran! He seems like the sort of guy you can sit and have a beer with and write great songs. Not to mention a couple of songs with him would more than pay for that Ferrari I’ve always wanted!
What are you looking forward to the most once the lockdown ends?
For me, there’s two answers! Firstly it’s being able to go to the pub and watch the football with my mates. Second and most important it has to be playing live. The rush from singing my songs to thousands of people isn’t something I can ever replicate, so I definitely miss this the most!
