Introducing Swedish Based Duo JUNG
After releasing their debut album ‘Dreamers’ brothers Tom and Henrik Ljungqvist are ready to usher in a new era with their latest track ‘Nobody Knows’. Raised in a family that cherished music to the fullest Tom and Henrik was constantly immersed in an array of genres and artists. Their music pallet continued to grow over the years, blossoming into the two pursuing their own career in the industry.
Creating a versatile and signature sound, the two have gone on to create engaging pop that spreads the message of hope and positivity. With the two hard at work on their upcoming second album, JUNG is ready to show the world what they’ve been up to and where they are headed.
We were able to chat with Tom and Henrik about everything from how they started JUNG, fatherhood, their single ‘Nobody Knows’ and more…
Let’s bring it back a bit, did you two always know you wanted to pursue music together?
Hey! Wow, funny you asked. When we come to think about it, guess we actually have been playing and jamming around a bit since we were kids, or at least when we were around 15-20. But the thought never really crossed our minds til Henrik got a track pitched to him from Kygo back in 2013/14 that we wrote a topline to together. The vocals didn’t end up on the song, but we really liked what we had created and that’s perhaps the moment when a first fraction of an idea of JUNG was born.
How did you two end up landing on your name JUNG?
We had a few different names that we liked, some Swedish ones too actually. But we felt that JUNG had a nice tone around it and spoke a little extra to us since we are brothers and it’s associated with our surname. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s not too hard to pronounce abroad as well.
When it comes to your guys taste in music, is there a big difference in the type of music you consume?
Hmm, that’s an interesting question. Yes and no.
Henrik – I think we listen to and have listened a lot to, the type of music we are making. But we’re also consumers of a lot of other different genres and musical styles. Last night we had The Blaze on repeat for instance, and lately, there’s been a few days of reggae (probably a result of the Swedish summer warmth). But I think you can hear a lot of different genres in our music, and we get inspired by everything from classic to Berlin deep house, and everything between.
What’s your guy’s creative process look like?
It’s different from song to song. Sometimes you get an idea on the day and you’re lucky and write a song really fast. And other times you can go around and think about a subject or some words and a melody for weeks before you finally get it down. The last two years we’ve been working more and more with other writers and producers which has been very inspiring and also sort of educational. And one thing we’ve learned is that every song has its own process and timeline. We really like when a song gets to marinate for a while before it’s released, so you’ve got time to make sure you really can live it. Cause you never know what song will be the big hit that you potentially will have to sing for the rest of your life hehe.
You both have recently become parents – Congratulations! – Has this affected your music and artistry
Thanks! Definitely. It changes everything. About you. Around you. And off course this affects your thoughts and feelings a lot which has spilled over not only on what we write about but also the way we handle our business. You become more effective since you have less time. You have to prioritize. Probably JUNG wouldn’t be what is today if we wouldn’t have been where we are in life right now.
How would you describe your sound?
Melocolicly optimistic. Energetic. And a sort of modern vintage.
Let’s chat about your latest release ‘Nobody Knows’. What’s the inspiration behind the track?
The song is about how you never know what’s gonna happen in the future and that’s why it’s so vital to enjoy what you got. Really classic, but oh so important to talk about every now and then. Maybe especially these days.
Absolutely love the video! Can you take us through the creative direction for the visual?
We talked about making something with a green screen that felt quite old school / low budget but still ha a retro quality and high production value kind of vibe to it. We liked what John Mayer had done with his New Light video.
Tom – I wanted to see if Henrik could dance, so I said I had a good idea for a music video and he fell for the whole thing (your welcome!). Also, we wanted to do something uplifting, and what is more uplifting than a spacey dance?
Can we expect any more summer releases from JUNG?
