Meet The Stellar Emerging Talent Alfie Templeman
Alfie Templeman is a bright new voice for Gen Z. The 17-year-old’s first taste of music was at the age of seven, learning how to play the drums. His curiosity didn’t stop there and soon Templeman was teaching himself the guitar, bass and production. In 2018, Alfie made his official debut with the single ‘Orange Juice’ and his first EP ‘Like an Animal’ soon followed. Between earning 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify, amassing millions of views on YouTube and touring all over the U.K with Sports Team, Alfie has been on a nonstop ride to stardom. With his GCSE’s now behind him and his groovy new EP ‘Happiness in Liquid Form’ circulating, Alfie is gearing up for an exciting new chapter of his music journey.
We were able to chat with Alfie Templeman about everything from his favourite instrument, his new EP ‘Happiness in Liquid Form’, and so much more. Read our full interview below…
When did you first pick up an instrument?
Probably about 6 when I had Cello lessons. I actually really enjoyed them!
At just 17 years old, you can play guitar, drums, bass and work with production – absolutely amazing! Which out of the four was the most challenging to take on? and which one came naturally?
Thanks! Drums is my most natural one but I also got lessons (it’s the only one I was taught) just to make sure I had the right technique. So in a way I wanted it to be the most challenging one by working on pretty hard rudiments at a young age.
Do you remember the moment in which you decided to go “all in” with pursuing a music career?
There was no definite moment where I decided that I wanted music to be my life, I guess I’ve just always loved it and wanted to do it which is cool!
Did you find it difficult to transition from finishing your GCSEs to a full-fledge recording artist?
I didn’t really find it difficult going from GCSEs to a music career because I was already making music in my room when I was revising for them and doing them. So it was an easy process.
Okay we need to talk about your brand new EP ‘Happiness in Liquid Form’ absolutely fantastic! Can you take us through the creative process for the record? Were their specific elements in terms of sound that were a must for the record?
Cheers! It was all about me kinda experimenting with different genres and sounds. I guess a lot of it came subconsciously, as I was listening to a lot of artists I hadn’t listened to much before like Emitt Rhodes.
What’s the overall theme for this project? What do you want listeners to feel during and after listening?
It’s an EP where each song is a different feeling, a different emotion. I suppose it’s basically my way of singing about how sometimes I can be really happy then next minute maybe not in the best mood and that everyone is human and feels these things.
Is there a track on the EP that holds a special place in your heart?
All of them. This whole EP was a very reflective project. Each song was about the last year of my life, about all the new opportunities and experiences. So I’m very sentimental with every track.
A little off-topic, how has life been for you during this on-going pandemic?
Sometimes great, sometimes awful. I guess I got to understand more about myself and realise that it’s good to make time for yourself and understand who you are as a person a bit more. Sometimes I had a lack of creativity and wasn’t feeling myself. But that’s okay, it’s normal to feel that way.
What advice can you give people who are struggling with everything that’s going on in the world at the moment?
Like I was saying, it’s okay to have duller days where you don’t feel like doing much because they are scars that become healed the more you take your time and remember it’s okay to be down.
With ‘Happiness in Liquid Form’ making the rounds, what’s next for Alfie Templeman? Will we be getting more visuals? More new music?
Who knows! I have a lot of songs ready, and I think it’s definitely nearly time for a bit of a bigger project. Let’s just wait and see!
