We were able to have an extensive chat with NVDES about the creative process for his album, what he’s been up to during quarantine, and so much more. Check out the full interview below…
Okay first things first, what’s the origin story behind your name ‘NVDES’?
One day when I was looking for a name for the project, I drove past a strip club on La Cienega Boulevard and the sign said “live nudes” … I liked the idea of how nudity and being nude with yourself and your creative ideas was the centre of my ethos for the project… So after some exploration on how the name resonated with me, I chose NVDES!
When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
For As long as I can remember. I started writing original music at 12 but when I was 15, I played a show with my first band at a coffee shop – there was a mosh pit and crowd surfing, it was wild to hear people screaming and having fun. I got hooked on the drug that is music that night and could really never let it go no matter what I tried to do to ignore it….
How would you describe your sound and the evolution of your sound over the years?
I created NVDES as a place to be “nude” with my creative ambitions and a place to collaborate with people in a way that was unattached to any preconceptions. My main goal as an artist and producer has always been to preserve the core creative idea and not try to “dress’ it up with overthinking and overproduction. To embrace this commitment to raw creativity, ultimately I had to embark on a journey of self-discovery, to be more and more nude or NVDE with myself and my ideas. I always let my inspiration guide me without attachment to a genre or sound. This has not only helped me discover new things about myself but also allowed me to evolve to create whatever I want in a way that is both genre-less and also very specifically NVDES.
Tell us about “Green” – what message do you want your music to spread?
“GREEN “ was created through a collaboration between myself and a 10 years old boy from the Netherlands named Nilo. Nilo shared with me a freestyle rap he wrote and recorded himself, inspired by the beauty of the planet and the colour green. I was deeply moved by the power of his vision and wanted to do everything I could to amplify the voice of the young generation that is growing up with the urgent need to solve the climate crisis.
How have you been managing during quarantine?
To be honest it has been a pretty powerful and positive time for me. I dedicated the time to focus on developing myself through meditation, a plant-based diet, and exercise to be the person and the artist that I truly want to be. I believe in this time of great extremes and uncertainty, it is important to focus on how to be the best version of ourselves inside to influence the world around us outside.
When it comes to creating music, what’s your setup been looking like and has that shifted while sheltering in place?
I am lucky to have already had my studio at home so I was pretty much all set up for this. It has been hard not collaborating with artists in person because that is something that I love more than anything but I would say the biggest change is incorporating FaceTime into my sessions and creative process…
You recently announced your sophomore album ‘NVDITY Worldwide’ which drops on September 25th. Can you tell us about your intention for the record and how your collaborations across the tracks came together?
Wow this was a long journey of vibration exploration… In May 2019 I designed a long sleeve with Loui Sixteen that had yin yang flames on it that said NVIDTY WORLDWIDE 888. Shortly after this, I was wearing the shirt at a session in Paris with Khadyak and she was inspired to freestyle about my shirt! Then about a week later, I was in Morocco and I decided that I wanted to focus on pushing the “High Frequency Vibration” aesthetic further and further. At the core of all my music is the raw creative energy, which often comes as a spark of inspiration. I wanted to capture these sparks and amplify them as much as I could with artists from around the world. I intended to use these collaborations as antenna points to share the “high-frequency vibrations” worldwide in order to elevate listeners and connect them with their higher creative faculties, and ultimately inspire more creativity to create a better world. Shortly after this inspiration I travelled to Berlin (my muse of a city) and was struck with the title of NVDITY WORLDWIDE as an album. For the rest of the year from June to December, I travelled all over North America and Europe on tour with Oliver Tree. While on this tour I was testing beats and finishing what would ultimately become the final album that features collaborations with artists from 14 different countries and was made by countless others.
Which track on the album are you most excited for fans to hear?
“Green” and 24/7 are personal favourites but I love them all. There is so much elevating energy packed into these tracks, I am just excited to be sharing all of them!
Besides your upcoming album release, what else does NVDES have planned in coming months?
I am about to build a new studio which is very exciting, but ultimately I am always just following where my inspiration takes me. Currently, I am preparing more singles and collabs to be released after the album. I am also starting to build the vibe for the 3rd album, which I will probably take some time with because it’s sonically very new territory for me 🙂
