Introducing The ‘Surf Alternative R&B’ Trio…We The Commas

We the Commas’ is an emerging band from California that’s ready to introduce a new era of music.

The band – which is made up of three brothers, Cam (17), Jordy (19) and Lenny (23) – first won the hearts of music lovers with their debut single ‘Sherry’. From it’s chill acoustic production to the soulful vocals, the band expertly secured their spot as one’s to watch. Their unique sound, which they have dubbed as ‘Surf Alternative RnB’, has helped them create their own music lane, setting themselves apart from other talents.

Taking inspiration from Frank Ocean, John Mayer, The 1975 and more, We The Commas’ are continuing to showcase their dynamic artistry with their debut EP ‘SARB’.

We were able to chat with the guys about everything from their musical upbringing, Southern California, their new EP, and more. Read the full interview below!

Thanks so much for chatting with us! How are you guys holding up during this crazy time?

Lenny – We’ve been doing great. The key to keeping our sanity is to keep busy working on things we find meaningful.

Are there any activities or self-care routines you three have been following?

Full Band – The main thing we found that helps us is sticking to a strict schedule every day where we work on various music, social media, and performance projects. We also make goals that we look forward to reaching so that we are always moving forward towards trying to find success.

Tell us about how it all started… Did you three always have a dream of pursuing music together?

Jordy – We grew up in a house where our parents played everything from Prince, Nirvana, Stevie Wonder, and jazz all on the same playlist. The wide array of music we were exposed to at a young age definitely inspired us to want to make music of our own. For Christmas one year, when the three of us were really young, our parents got us the video game Rock Band. We instantly fell in love with music. We all decided to take music lessons and join a legit music school shortly after and the rest is history. From a young age creating music together was something that made us happy and even gave us purpose. Doing this together has been a dream come true.

Beach culture, hot weather, and the Hollywood aesthetic are commonly associated with Southern California. How does being from Cali influence your life and sound?

Jordy – We’ve grown up in San Diego our whole lives and the beach has been a huge part of it since we were young. Activities like surfing, skating, skimboarding, and beach volleyball definitely influenced our sound.

Okay a little off-topic, but please settle this ongoing debate… In N Out is the best burger chain out there, right? No wrong answers, haha.

Lenny – In N Out is by far the best burger I’ve ever had or ever will have!

Let’s talk about your fantastic single ‘Pissed Off’! What was the inspiration behind the record?

Lenny – “Pissed Off” was inspired by my days in college. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and I didn’t know where my place was in this world. Writing this song was cathartic because I got to be very blunt about how I was feeling. Now looking back I’m so thankful I went through that season of life because it made the person I am today.

The video is amazing, and gives us major Mad Max vibes. Was this the intent for the visual?

Full band –  This was definitely the intent! Our manager Chris Rosa and all of us are very inspired by the film, so when Chris had the idea to incorporate some of his favorite films and a cinematic adventure into the aesthetic of the music video and we were all for it!

8: And your debut EP SARB is out now. Tell us about that…

Cam – We’re really excited for our first EP SARB.  We always found ourselves trying to classify what genre of music ours fit into but nothing seemed right. We realized our music is its own kind of thing and we needed to make a new genre to classify it. We have all been influenced by many different kinds of music and we draw from these places to write our songs. For our first EP, nothing seemed more right than calling it SARB (which  stands for Surf Alternative R&B), as these genres fully encapsulate our sound. This small collection of songs is our introduction as a Southern California band of brothers, and highlights glimpses of our many influences that we certainly will be expandinh on in the future.

9: Looking ahead what are the five major goals you want to achieve in the next five years?

1: Go on a world tour.
2: Inspire as many people as possible to follow their dreams.
3: Reach the entire world through our music.
4: Explore other creative outlets like acting / film making.
5: Continue to grow our relationship as brothers.
6: A major goal of ours is to hopefully inspire a generation of people who aim to stay absolutely authentic to themselves and never let any social norm or construct hold them back from being fully themselves.
