Meet Rising R&B Songstress Lucy Park

If you love the R&B/Soul genre as much as we do here at Spindle, then brace yourself for the fantastic rising artist Lucy Park. The young talent first got her start in the music sphere in 2018, working on her craft and songwriting skills. In August 2020, Park released her first track ‘Rain’, which showcased her hypnotic vocals and lyrical prowess. The song has since amassed over 5 million streams and given R&B fans a taste at what Park is capable of.

Fast forward to 2021 and Park has released two more tracks that further demonstrates her undeniable talent and versatility. With her debut EP set to debut next month and accompanying visuals lined up, Lucy Park is gearing up for her incredible rise in the music world.

We were able to chat with the singer-songwriter about everything from her creative process, defeating writer’s block and her fantastic single ‘True to You’. Read the full interview below!

Heya Lucy! How’s your day going so far?

Hey! It’s been busy but I can’t complain!

Can you believe February is almost over? Where has the time gone! Have you been managing well under lockdown? You’re in Los Angeles, right?

Yeah managing well, but ready for the goddamn vaccine. Yes! In LA finishing my last semester of college.

Okay let’s chat about music, do you remember the moment you fell in love with R&B?

I can’t really pinpoint one moment, but I started listening to Jorja Smith in high school and immediately fell in love with her melodies and never looked back.

Is there an album or song that helped shape you and your artistry?

“Love is a Losing Game” by Amy Winehouse has always been a favourite of mine, and she is one of my biggest influences.

Can you take us through your creative process? How is a Lucy Park track created?

It’s different every time. The way I like to write now is by singing over chords or an instrumental that my band plays. I just hum melodies and say jibberish into the mic or voice memos, and then pass it around until we find our favourite melodies. Everyone helps me find words to fit, and little by little, songs come together. Sometimes we can finish a whole song in an hour, and other times it takes weeks. I’ll often think of lyrics on my way home from the studio or the next day, so I am kind of always writing. 

As a songwriter has there ever been a time in which you hit writer’s block? What methods do you take to combat that?

Of course! It’s easy to get caught up in creating. Learning to be patient and flexible with myself has been huge in getting over writer’s block. Something that’s helpful for me when I just get stuck on a verse or a melody is a change of setting. I can be stuck on a lyric for an hour and as soon as I step outside, I approach writing with a new perspective. When writer’s block is on a deeper level, I’m learning how to step away from the song, and immerse myself in everyday life. Inspiration comes to me randomly, so I think inviting inspiration rather than forcing it helps my process a lot. This is a lot harder said than done, but continuing to practice it will help my music in the long run.

The world of R&B music is steadily becoming a staple in the mainstream music sphere. Which one of your R&B peers would you love to work with?

I would love love love to work with Jorja Smith, Joy Crookes or SZA. 

Your latest single ‘True to You’ is absolutely fantastic! From its sound to its lyrical content. What was the inspiration behind the track?

Glad you like it! My whole After Dinner team was in the studio the day we started writing it and the energy we all had from being together for the first time in a while put us in the mood to make something light, fun, and flirty. The goal was capturing a feeling and energy rather than a specific story. Anoop D’Souza and I finished writing and rewriting the track in my living room several times before we landed on the final version.

With three dynamic singles – ‘Rain’, ‘Cold’, and True to You– making the rounds what can music fans expect from Lucy Park in the coming months? 

A lot more! I have an EP coming out on March 12th with a few videos, and I’m already working on a bunch of stuff that will come after that!
