Asher Monroe is the definition of a triple threat! A successful singer-songwriter, he’s graced Broadway and is a successful actor, with many A-list fans! 2021 is his year and with an album already released this year, Asher is gearing towards another new release pretty soon. We caught up with him to discuss his new single ‘Midnight Masquerade’ and his love for the bagpipes!
Asher, we adore your new single ‘Midnight Masquerade’. Can you tell us how a track like that comes to life? What is the whole process behind making an epic song like that?
I’m happy you responded so well to it; it definitely has its own signature sound. Creating this track was a gradual process and it started with the main verse melody and piano chords you hear in the finished production. I knew for this song I wanted big drums to give a more anthemic feel and the first time I got goosebumps was when the strings got layered. My favourite sound, believe it or not, is the bagpipe because it takes it to a whole new space.
We also got to hear a snippet of the forthcoming album ‘Windows of Time’ – it’s a pretty special record. How do you feel about unleashing the record out into the world?
I feel it’s time to show the world a different side of me. In a way, it feels like a full-circle moment as some of the album has a theatric root, which is where it all began for me. I wasn’t afraid to bend the rules, so I can’t be afraid of how the world will react. There’s actually something exciting about releasing something so different and unique.
‘Windows of Time’ feels like it’s almost a world away from your most recent release ‘Talk With God’. Why did you decide to release two very distinctively different albums in such close succession?
“A World Away “- you got that right! It was time for me to go back to the drawing board and completely reinvent myself. I listen to a lot of different styles of music, so I enjoy exploring sounds and pushing the limits. The closeness of releasing both albums was not necessarily something that was planned in advance, it was just the way the dominoes were falling.
We saw Neil Patrick Harris and Elton John are both fans of your music. How does it feel when you’re being celebrated by such stars?
I try to surround myself with other talented people who have the same drive and tenacity. It always feels good to have my industry comrades chime in on my successes.
You’re not one to shy away from collaborating with other artists, Who would you love to get onboard for an Asher track?
It would have to be Lady Gaga.
You’re a man of many talents and a triple threat as an actor, singer and performer. If you had to choose between acting and singing, would you be able too?
I think at one point I was conflicted. The acting business was a carrot waved in front of my face for many years, almost like a shiny toy, but the music is what touches my heart and soul. It’s what I was born to do and the acting will always be just another form of expressing my creativity.
Do you have any plans to get back on the stage and screen in the near future?
Yes, to stage …. Maybe to screen.
What would be your dream role as Asher the Actor?
I would love to play Elvis one day!
What differentiates the Asher Monroe we see on stage and in magazines, to the Asher Monroe your family and close friends get to see behind closed doors?
I think the one big difference is that my friends and family get to see more of my sense of humour. I come across pretty serious but I’m a goofball behind closed doors.
Outside of music, what takes up your spare time?
Travelling, cooking, working out and walking my dogs.
As a modern-day artist, do you feel as though social media is a help or a hindrance to your career and how you communicate with your fans?
I think social media is a great tool in connecting directly to my fans, but I try not to let it run my life. I don’t wake up and freak out thinking about what I need to post or share. It’s more when I feel a real need to share something I’m sharing new music or videos with my followers.
What is your favourite social media platform and why?
Instagram is my favourite platform because I like connecting with graphic artists and other emerging talent.
With lots of music ready to be released, dare we ask what else you’re going to be working on throughout 2021?
I’ll have to keep the rest under wraps, unfortunately. It might be a superstition but I prefer to keep things to myself until they’re near finished. I can assure you that there is a lot more to come, so stayed tuned!
