If you like a mix of R&B, jazz, hip hop, and emo then Finn Askew needs to be on your radar. Hailing from the small market town of Somerset, Finn was introduced to the world of music through his mother and father. As he grew older his love for the arts continued to grow and he soon found himself taking guitar lessons. After a short stint with formal lessons, the young talent continued to experiment with the instrument alone and on his own terms. Alongside Finn’s love for the guitar, he found solace in artists like Lil Peep, XXXTentacion, The Beach Boys, Nirvana, and Juice Wrld – which ultimately helped shape his dynamic sound.

In 2020, Finn made his debut into the music sphere with a sleuth of releases that included ‘I Won’t Let You Fall’, ‘Roses’, and ‘Same Old Love’. Each of the records showcased his impressive songwriting skills and unique genre-bending sound. His latest single ‘Paranoia’ highlights his dynamic artistry and continues to give fans a taste of what his music is really made of. With his debut EP currently in the works, Finn is gearing up for his music takeover. We were able to chat with the rising talent about everything from his brand new single, upcoming releases, and so much more. Read the full interview below.

Hey Finn! How’s it hanging?

Hey!!! I’m doing very well thanks.

Summer is finally here! Any fun plans or travels?

I’m super gassed bout this summer got a few festivals lined up which will be so sick!!! and I’m defo hoping to get abroad a few times, already booked zante with the lads which should be fun.

Holiday plans aside, let’s get into the music. Taking it back to your childhood, was there a person or artist that inspired you to take an interest in music?

I was very young when I got into music & for me, there wasn’t an artist who made me take an interest in it, 100% further down the line I’ve had artist’s who have inspired me but the initial person who got me into music was my mum. I didn’t even speak about it being something I wanted to do, probably cause I never even thought about it but one day my mum just booked me guitar lessons and it all just made sense.

You were surrounded by an array of genres growing up but do you remember the moment you fell in love with Hip Hop?

I think for me the hip hop that really influenced me from overseas America, the SoundCloud rapper era. This was the time I discovered some of my favourite artists like xxxtentacion, Lil peep, juice etc. These people shaped me so much as the artist I am today so yeah that was the time I fell in love with hip hop.

Your singles are so dynamic when it comes to their production. How would you personally describe your sound?

A box of chocolates, you never know when you’re gonna get. Bet you’ve never heard that quote before.

The same can be said for your songwriting skills. Can you take us through your songwriting process? What topics do you like to explore when creating new tracks?

My songwriting process is always different like sometimes I start with a word for example my song peach I just knew I wanted a song with that name so started there. To find my melodies and flows I just put the track on mute and freestyle into the mic, always come out with something good to work with. But yeah overall the process is really different jus depends on the day. I feel like a lot of my music is about girls & love but the reason I can keep doing tune after tune bout it is cause there are so many different directions to come from when it comes to love uno, the ups the downs, the heartbreak and the joy.

We have got to talk about your brand new single Paranoia! What themes did you want to explore with this record?

Yes, yes, yes! I wanted a tune that represents Finn Askew best and I feel like if I was in song form this would be it. You really just need to listen to understand.

Please tell us we’ll be getting an accompanying video for the song?

You’ll be getting a *movie!

You’ve been on fire with your releases since your debut last year. Will an EP or album be next?

Doing another EP then maybe another then who knows we might see an album.

Can you give fans a sneak peek at what they can expect from Finn Askew in the coming months?

I’ve got a few festivals lined up, a few new bangers to drop & a couple of other tings up my sleeve.

Thanks for sitting down with us Finn!
