Meet The Rising R&B Powerhouse…Miiesha

If you are in need of some heartfelt R&B then rising talent Miiesha is the artist for you. Hailing from the small Aboriginal community of Woorabinda, Australia, the young talent was first introduced to music by her mother. Growing up, she listened to an array of genres and artists like Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, and gospel. As the years went on Miiesha’s love for music grew and at the age of 13 she wrote her first song.

In 2019, the emerging talent began her journey as a dynamic artist when she released her powerful single ‘Black Privilege’. Wasting no time, Miiesha went on to drop her debut project titled Nyaaringu. The record received critical acclaim and won numerous awards including the 2020 ARIA for Best Soul/RnB Release, a QLD Music Award and a NIMA. Fast forward to 2021 and the songstress is continuing her upward trajectory with her latest track ‘Made for Silence’. Backed by an alternative-R&B sound, the track is a danceable record that showcases her versatility as an artist. With her latest track making the rounds and more releases in the coming months Miiesha is showing no signs of slowing down.

We were able to chat with Miiesha about everything from her music origins, her brand new video for ‘Made for Silence’. upcoming projects and more. Read the full interview below.

Heya Miiesha! How’s it going?

It’s going good, thanks! Really excited to have “Made For Silence” out in the world!

How has 2021 been treating you so far?

It has been a rollercoaster. Releasing new music is always exciting, and I have been able to play some shows which is great. There have been a lot of cancelled shows and a lot of travel restrictions so everyone’s just had to learn to go with the flow I guess.

 Let’s dive into the music origins! Looking back, what type of genres dominated your household growing up?

It was definitely R&B that my mum would play in the house, Janet Jackson, Mariah, all the 90’s and early 2000’s stuff! But also gospel music was really important through church.

When was your ‘ah-ha’ moment that prompted you to pursue a career in the industry? 

When I was about 13 I wrote my first ever song and put it on YouTube. I then randomly got a call from a private school in Sydney who wanted to fly my Mum and my brother down with me so I could perform the song at their NAIDOC assembly. They even had the school choir learn my song and back me up! It was a crazy moment to realise music could take me away from the community and let me explore the world and share how I’m feeling.

Your music effortlessly showcases your versatility as an artist. How would you personally describe your sound?

I think I’ll always be ‘R&B’ in some way, but I don’t want to be put in a box, I just want to make music that excites me and shares the story I’m trying to tell.

We have to talk about your emotive release ‘Made for Silence’! You touch on topics like trauma and grief. Did you find it difficult to tap into these emotions while writing the track? 

Yeah, it can be difficult to dive in, but it is also a form of healing. I usually write myself out of a bad place. Once I’m excited by the song and can hear it I’m usually able to feel a lot better about having written it.

The accompanying video for the record continues where the ‘Damaged’ visual left off. Can you take us through the creative process for the project?

The car in the video represents my Grandmother who passed a couple of years ago. With her gone she wasn’t around to be between me and my mum’s relationship. So the songs are really about that link between my Nan passing and me and my Mums broken relationship. Visually in Damaged my Nan can’t carry the family forward anymore, so we’re all on our grieving journey, whereas with Made for Silence I’m moving forward with what she left behind, what she instilled in, that strength.

What message or reaction do you want fans to take away after watching the visual?

It’s meant to be a lot of fun, but also I want them to see the deeper meaning that you need to find your strength. Hopefully, a lot of people have given you a lot of love, and even if they aren’t with you now, that love is still there.

With ‘Made for Silence’ officially making the rounds, can fans expect an EP or album release soon? 

Yes!! You’ll probably hear another one or two songs then I’ll be dropping the full project. It’s all linked together, it’s all a story!

What’s in store for this new Miiesha era in the coming months?

I am supposed to do my first headline tour but shows are getting postponed, so we’ll just see where we get to. Other than that I’ve been writing more lately. But mostly I’ll be focusing on releasing all this new music I have!
