Meet The Multi-Talented Pop Artist Dasha

Attention pop music lovers! We have a brand new artist that needs to be on your radar and her name is Dasha. Born and raised in California, the young talent first fell in the love with the art of music at an early age. In elementary school, she began taking part in extracurricular activities like dance and musical theatre. As she grew older her love for the craft progressed when she started to consume the immersive catalogue of Taylor Swift. Having been bit by the music bug, Dasha started to pursue her own adventure in the industry and began to attend songwriting camps and voice lessons. Alongside developing her lyrical and vocal talent, she also learned the ins and outs of the producing world with her brother Bardo.

A chance summer night in Nashville prompted the emerging artist to attend Belmont University and take on their prestigious music program. Amidst her studies and navigating college life, Dasha met popular singer/songwriter zyyn. The two wasted no time collaborating and soon released their track ‘Heart on Hold.’ The critically acclaimed song would go on to help her land gigs in both Nashville and Los Angeles, which led to her music star rising substantially.

Fast forward to 2021 and Dasha has released an array of viral tracks like ‘Nervous’ and ‘Love Me Till August’ which took over the social media app TikTok. The rising talent also dropped her debut EP $hiney Things, a collection of tracks that expertly showcased her songwriting abilities and catchy pop hooks. With her new single ‘Talk’ officially making the rounds, over 1 million streams and a growing fan base, nothing is going to stop Dasha from reaching her full pop star potential. We were able to chat with the young artist about everything from her music inspiration, her most “toxic lyrics yet”, her upcoming album and so much more. Read her interview below.

Heya Dasha! How’s your summer going?

Hey! It’s been so great. I finally moved to LA and it feels so great to be out here.

Can you believe 2021 is almost over? How have you been spending the year?

I know it’s crazy! Still feels like it just began. I’ve been spending 2021 finally releasing the music that I’ve been writing for the past few months. Also, getting ready, writing, and conceptualizing my debut album. This year has also been a time for self-reflection and self-respect. Mental health is so important; take time for yourself- you deserve it.  

Let’s dive into the music. Looking back to your childhood, which album or artist did you gravitate to the most?

Taylor Swift was the reason I started songwriting at the age of 10. She has always been such an inspiration to me as an artist, songwriter and as a woman. 

When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?

Subconsciously, I think I’ve always known. I’m talking since second or third grade. I started doing dance shows and musical theatre when I was three so performing and entertaining has always been a natural part of me.

Throughout your progression, as an artist, you’ve attended songwriting camps. Do you still use lessons from your time in there?

Absolutely! I went to Idyllwild Arts summer camp when I was 15 and 16 and the lessons I learned were invaluable. It was the first time I was taught about how the music industry works for artists and songwriters, recording techniques, the different structures of songs, co-writing, etc. I’m very grateful for the time I spent there. 

Your prowess as a songwriter can effortlessly be seen in your new track ‘TALK’. Can you take us through the creative process for the record?

The idea for ‘TALK’ came through something that actually happened in my life. I got ghosted by a guy, but I hate losing so I blocked his number. He then left a really pathetic voicemail (which is played in the song about ¾th  the way through). At my age (21), I’m personally not looking to settle down anytime soon, rather to have fun and play some games while I’m at it. ‘TALK’ is about that.

You described the song as having your “most toxic lyrics yet” (which is iconic). Can you explain the meaning behind that?

Like I was saying. I’m just trying to make memories, make some questionable decisions all for the plotline. The lyrics are the most toxic because I’m basically saying if someone’s playing games with you, play the same game right back, but even better. AKA, if they ghost you, block their number so they panic. “For a couple of days, I might go M.I.A, maybe mess with your brain.”

The song has such a genre-bending sound to it! How would you personally describe the track’s production?

The production was a joint effort by Matt Harris and my older brother, Bardo. I’d say it’s pop-dance-rock.

Before releasing ‘Talk’, your two previous releases ‘Nervous’ and ‘Love Me Till August’ went viral on TikTok. How does it feel to hear your track throughout the app?

It’s honestly an unbelievable feeling. I’m so proud of myself and my whole team. We’ve come a long way in less than one year.

We hear that you are working on your debut album! How will this upcoming record differ from your dynamic debut EP $hiny Things?

This upcoming album is really special to me because it’s really personal. The subject matter of all the songs are things I actually went through. The music is vulnerable, honest and relatable. But even on top of the sonics, the concept and visuals of the project is so genuine. I’ve been workshopping this project for almost a year now.

Looking ahead, where would you like to see Dasha the artist in five years time? 

Winning Grammys, on several world tours, charting on Billboard and globally, and making a genuine difference with my music. I also hope to use my platform and influence to make positive changes to the music industry, women’s rights, animal protection, global warming and a whole lot more.
