Meet The Emerging R&B Powerhouse Kara Marni

With a vintage 90’s R&B sound and emotive lyrics, rising star Kara Marni is an artist that needs to be on your radar. Before making her mark in the industry, music has been at the forefront of Kara’s life since she was a little girl. Surrounded by artists like Roberta Flacks, Minnie Riperton and Amy Winehouse, the songstress has had an endless catalogue of talented individuals that have inspired her musical journey. In 2017, Kara debuted on the scene with her hypnotizing cover of Sade’s hit track ‘No Ordinary Love’ – which gave music listeners a sneak peek at her undeniable talent.

Over the years, the singer-songwriter continued to showcase her versatility as a vocalist and storyteller with her infectious singles like ‘No Logic’, ‘Young Heart’, ‘All Night’ and more. Her latest EP release –State of Mine – dives further into her creativity and see’s the R&B talent cover themes of love, loneliness, self-reflection and self-empowerment. We were able to chat with Kara about the EP, her favourite track, and so much more. Read the full interview below.

Heya Kara! How’s it going? 

I’m actually doing good, thank you. Lots better than this time last year!

Can you believe it’s already September? If you had to describe 2021 in five words what would they be?

The months have fully rolled into one this year! 5 words…errr… pandemic, quarantine, doomscrolling, resilience and wishful.

Let’s bring it back to your music origins. Growing up which genres and artists filled your household as a kid?

My dad played lots of great music around the house from lots of different genres etc and i clearly picked up on the soul records he was playing. Anita Baker, Minnie Riperton really inspired me to learn the whistle register! Teena Marie. All the big voices!

Do you remember you “ah-ha moment” that inspired you to pursue a career in music?

When my Dad first played me Roberta Flacks ‘The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face’ it moved me so much…

Your dynamic singles have such an early noughties R&B vibe to them. How would you personally describe your sound?

I’d say it’s soulful R&B with splashes of pop!

We’ve got to talk about your fantastic single ‘2nd Nature’! Can you take us through the creative process for the record? What inspired you to write the track?

2nd Nature, I mean the clue is very much in the title. I wrote it about being so comfortable with someone that being around them became an obsession. A good obsession. We all have one person in our life whereas I say in the song ‘you don’t have to talk, some things you don’t say, you just know.’

Okay, the accompanying video for the record is amazing! It’s giving a Mother Nature type vibe. Is this the theme or message you were going for with the visual?

Yes! That’s exactly what I was going for. I always like to try to display to another dimension of my songs in the videos. Obviously, it’s a play on the title 2nd Nature and I really wanted to feel in control and be empowering, so we created scenes that illustrate me and my feminine energy being in control of the elements! Fire, water and a wind and air.

Alongside the release of ‘2nd Nature’, you also just dropped your new EP State of Mine. What can fans expect from the new project?

The most vulnerability they will have seen from me.

Which track are you most excited for fans to hear?

Sick of me, my most personal song on the EP.

Looking ahead, what type of impact do you want to have on the R&B genre and music sphere as a whole?

To show that authenticity wins, always.
