Introducing The Innovative Singer-Songwriter Camden Cox

Camden Cox is an emerging dance-pop talent that needs to be on your radar. Hailing from Lincoln in the East Midlands, Camden has constantly been surrounded by the music world. From a young age, the songstress would attend her father’s band gigs to study the stylish type of rock music he would play. While at home, her music-savvy mother would fill the house with the rebellious sounds of The Prodigy, garage music and house tracks. Camden soon found herself starting her own music journey, which comprised of her creating melodies and writing original songs.

After experiencing a slight setback, the rising talent soon found her stride, and she began releasing her own music. Since her debut in 2016, Camden has worked with globally renowned producers including Sonny Fodera, Eli & Fur, Vintage Culture and Noizu. Her music has also caught the attention of tastemakers around the world, which has led to her ever-growing fan base. With an unapologetic presence and a truly dynamic sound, Camden Cox is proving to be an unstoppable force in the industry. We were able to chat with the Staying The Night singer about everything from her 2022 plans, her latest single, and so much more. Read the full interview below.

Stepping ontoIt’s no exaggeration to say that Cox has music in her blood. While she was growing up in Lincoln in the East Midlands, her dad played drums in a band and her mum was a club promoter who loved drum and bass music.

Happy New Year! How does it feel to officially be in 2022?

Happy new year to you too! Honestly it feels amazing, 2021 was an amazing year for me musically, but it’s all been in preparation for 2022.

What do you think is the most important thing you’ve learnt about yourself in the past year?

Patience! I signed a major record deal in 2021 and that’s quite an amazing journey! There’s a lot that goes into it so it takes time (and a hell of a lot of paperwork)! Trusting the process is so important, and knowing how to crack on in the meantime – remembering to stay creative whilst business is taken care of 🙂

Any resolutions you’re keen on achieving over the next 12 months? 

I would love to learn how to DJ, seeing as I started on the club scene! I grew up on dance music so it’s something I wish I’d dipped into before, but toplining and singing has always been my thing! Better late than never to get behind the decks! It would be so fun.

I want to take it back a bit to your musical beginnings. Growing up, what types of artists did you faithfully listen to?

Anything Ministry Of Sound / Defected! I used to buy the compilation CD’s and have them on all the time, the likes of Eric Prydz, Roger Sanchez, Toddla T. My mum would also be blasting dnb when I got home from school so I listened to a lot of that as well, Pendulum / Andy C etc.

When did you have your “ah-ha moment” that inspired you to pursue music full time?

I met Labrinth when I first moved to London, he saw me singing karaoke in a quiet pub on a random Wednesday evening! He gave me some amazing advice that inspired me to start writing music, not just singing it!

You have created such a dynamic presence within the dance music world. How would you personally describe Camden Cox’s sound?

Nostalgic, euphoric, raw, emotional, progressive! Something you can sing along to whilst crying and raving at the same time!

Let’s dive further into your brand new track ‘Over’. What was the inspiration behind the record’s emotive lyrics?

It’s a situation I got myself into during lockdown, but I think most people will relate! It’s that moment immediately after a break-up where it’s not quite sunk in that you’ve broken up.. it’s unnatural NOT to touch and be close. ‘It ain’t over till you’re gone’. It’s such a confusing time where you haven’t even had the chance to miss them being yours.

You’ve also treated fans to an accompanying music video for the record. Can you take us through your thought process on the visual? What key elements did you want to showcase? 

That claustrophobic tension you both feel when you don’t know where you stand. They are still there with you, in your space, so is it really over? You can try to avoid each other or you can get back together.. This is the exact situation I was in (especially being mid lockdown)! I wanted the glamour to be showcased when I finally found myself alone, that feeling of release you feel when you’re able to let it all out and cry.

 If you had to describe your new music era as a movie genre what would it be?

Romance, Drama! With a 5* rating of course.

What else can fans expect from Camden Cox though out this year? 

Expect plenty of solo moments, a live show, more singles etc! I’ve also been working with some VERY exciting dj’s and producers so hold tight for some mint collaborations.
