Introducing The Fiery Emerging Artist… Emmy Meli

Backed by empowering lyrics and an R&B-pop sound, Emmy Meli is an emerging artist that’s quickly taking the entertainment world by storm. The California native first fell in love with music at a young age. Growing up, she consumed the likes of Minnie Riperton, Amy Winehouse, Betty Everett and Duffy. With numerous artists and styles floating throughout her household, Emmy slowly started to work on her vocal talent and artistry. Alongside honing her voice, she also began channelling her life experiences into songwriting.

In 2020, the singer made her official debut with her first batch of singles, including ‘Wanting More‘, ‘On the Rocks‘, and ‘Tribute to Holywood.’ 2021 proved to be another monumental year for Emmy – due to her critically acclaimed track ‘I AM WOMAN.’ Since its release, the single has been used over 150,000 times on TikTok and has earned millions of likes. With the song continuing to impact the social media sphere and new music set for release, Emmy is showing no signs of slowing down. We were able to chat with the 21-year-old about her new music era, her ‘I AM WOMAN’ video, and so much more. Read the interview below.

Hi Emmy Meli! How’s 2022 treating you so far?

Excitingly, it hasn’t been necessarily peaceful, but it’s been so exciting! 

Let’s jump into your beginnings. What is your earliest memory of music and falling in love with it?

My earliest music memory was when I was singing Duke of Earl in the living room. I must have been 5 or 6. My dad said, “maybe it’s your job to bring that style back, Emily”. He told me, “you sound too good not to”. I actually forgot about that.

What record or artist(s) were you obsessed with whilst growing up? Any guilty pleasures that you still reflect on and play as an adult?

Amy Winehouse. I’m just obsessed with her! It’s not even a guilty pleasure, but… the Pussycat dolls. What a name for a group! 

How did you fall into the music industry and become a recording artist?

I had a friend in high school who liked producing. He liked my voice, so I would go to his house, sit in the garage and record random things. I found that I loved it and was actually really good at it. 

What’s an average recording session like for you?

I usually go in with a very specific vision or plan. I’ve already written and practised exactly what I want to say and sing. It’s very organized in my brain. I go in and do exactly what I need to do. Then I Postmates vegan food. 

Your latest single, ‘I Am Woman’, is such a fantastic record. What type of headspace were you in while making the song?

I need to get this shit finished. I was in go mode, panicking, trying to finish it and get it out. The pressure was on for sure. 

What do you want your fans to take away after listening? 

That being a woman can mean anything you want it to be. That you can do anything you want to do. 

You also dropped an empowering music video for the track. What was the creative process like for the visual? What elements did you want to showcase?

I had an amazing team who helped make the message visual and the casting diverse, inclusive and as talented as possible. There is no shade or shape of beauty. That music should be a safe space for people to feel themselves and not be judged. 

How would you describe your new music era in five words or less?

Evolved, nostalgic, but current and it’s very personal. 

What goals do you want to achieve by the end of this year?

I want to be on TV. I want to see my face on a billboard and I cannot wait to put my project out!
