Spindle Radar: Peach Pit Make Their Return With From 2 to 3

After nearly a two-year hiatus, the guys of Peach Pit are back with their third offering ‘From 2 to 3’. Tapping in renowned producer Robbie Lackritz, the band delivers their signature sound while also incorporating new organic and acoustic elements into the 11-track record. From the tambourine, cowbell, harmonica, and lap steel, the album showcases their boundless creativity that elevates their artistry to new heights. Alongside its dynamic production, the group debuts their most emotive lyrics yet with standout tracks like ‘Everything About You’, ‘Vickie’ and ‘Last Day of Lonesome’. We were able to chat with the band about the record, their favourite track, upcoming international tour and more. Read the full interview below.

Heya guys! Thanks for sitting down with SPINDLE. How’s it going?

Good! Just sitting at home this morning drinking some coffee.

Congratulations on releasing your brand new album From 2 to 3! How does it feel to have it out finally?

Feels so good! There’s definitely a lot of anxiety that happens before releasing a new record, but I always find that the second it’s out that all goes away. Then I honestly just stop caring about it and start thinking about new music to make!

You released your second album, You and Your Friends, nearly two years ago. When did you officially start diving into your new music era?

Pretty soon after writing YAYF we got to working on this record. So maybe late 2019? The first song we wrote for it was the title track, and that was written sometime in October of that year.

How did you guys come up with the title From 2 to 3? Can you take us through its meaning and inspiration? 

The song came before the record title. I wrote the song one night after waking up from a bad dream, it sounds pretty cliche, to say the least, but it was one of those dreams where you wake up, and it still sticks with you. Anyway, I was so sad from this dumb dream about an old friend of mine, so I got up and wrote this song. It seemed like a good title for the record because it was our 3rd record, and I pictured most of the songs being set at night time.

Track’s like ‘Everything About You’, ‘Last Days of Lonesome’ and ‘2015’ really pull at the heartstrings. What themes or stories did you want to explore this time around? 

Most of the songs I write are about friends of mine. Then because the pandemic hit and we couldn’t see our friends anymore, those people were heavy on my mind. So I guess most of the songs are just about old times. 

The production on this album is absolutely fantastic! What were some of your musical influences when creating the project’s official sound? 

We got super heavy into George Harrison, Paul Mccartney, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and a lot of oldies over the past few years, so we set out to try and make a record that sounded like those guys. I don’t know that we necessarily achieved that, but those artists were at the forefront of our minds while recording.

Out of the 11 dynamic tracks, which song are you most excited for fans to listen to?

“Drips on a Wire” is one of my favs off the album. I love Chris’ guitar solo, and we have a key change at the end of the song, which has been something we’ve tried to do for years now. They can be pretty hard to pull off because if you don’t do it tastefully, they are hella cheesy. But this one worked!

How does From 2 to 3 differ from your previous two records? How is it similar?

We tried to make a record that just sounded like us playing in a room together, so we didn’t add too many effects to vocals and guitars and played most of the songs live in the studio. But then, at the same time, we’re all the same guys playing on the record as always, so the album still sounds like us. We’re never trying to sound like “Peach Pit”, we just don’t really know any other way of making music. 

We hear you’re starting an international tour this month. What can fans expect from these upcoming performances? 

Hopefully, lots of stage diving. Pls, don’t drop me!

Is there a particular stop you all are excited about? 

SF and LA for sure! We play two nights back to back in both those cities, and that’s always nice because we get to hunker down in one spot for a bit longer. 

What else can fans look forward to from Peach Pit throughout 2022? 

Lots and lots of shows! Hoping to hit every continent this year!
