Meet The London-Based Alt-Pop Artist… Georgia Meek

We speak to Georgia Meek who has just released her new single ‘All My Friends Need Therapy’. Since launching a solo career in early 2017, following a string of successes in various bands, the London based alt-pop artist has cultivated a growing and dedicated following of fans, by preaching values in her music around feminism and sexual fluidity, reflected by experimental production and sombre melodies. Georgia prides herself in being an accomplished producer and prolific writer, insisting that the industry moves towards a more gender equal landscape, encouraging artists to work with female producers. Since founding FMP World (Female Music Producers World) in early 2020, she has gathered a community of more than 3,000 women in music production, creating a platform for their voices and talent to be heard.

Hey Georgia, how are you? How is the start of your summer going? 

I’m great! Summer is killer already, I’m just back from the In It Together festival in Wales, and before that I was playing some shows out in Oslo which was incredible. Shout out to all my new Norwegian friends, you guys are amazing!

Tell us about your new single ‘All My Friends Need Therapy’

I wrote the single with my buddy Mark Siegel who’s based out in Nashville and I think you can hear that on the record – he put a really fun country flavour into it that I haven’t explored before. The reaction & support on it so far has been mad and I just wanna say a huge thank you to everyone who’s been listening/playing/sharing etc. It’s surreal to hear your own record pop up on the radio and even more so to hear people singing along!!!

You started FMP World (Female Music Producers World) in 2020 – tell us more about it and why you decided to launch the platform 

It came from a post I made in an online production forum – I’d had a bad experience and wanted to know if there was anyone else like me out there. Turns out there were f*****g LOADS. My friend Ullie Swan and I decided to create a dedicated space online for conversations between women in the tech field and the rest is history. Since then we’ve hosted in-person events as well as digital masterclasses and interviews from some of the industry’s most successful female producers. 

What are your top 3 tips to female producers starting out in the music industry?

Set boundaries and never feel afraid to enforce them – you deserve the same respect, rights and imbursement for your time as anyone else. You’ll probably get called bossy, bitchy or dramatic at one point or another – that’s ok. Stay professional, lead by example, and know that enforcing your worth is both important and beneficial. 

Get to know like minded people and find a network of people that suits you and your career goals. There’s no shame in asking for help, and there are people out there who are willing to give it – just remember that the industry can be very transactional and so having something to offer goes a long way, whether it be an exchange of skills or a simple coffee. 

Start small – for me it was vocal engineering. You can’t master production overnight and even the most successful producers will tell you they are still learning. If you’re trying to engineer, program, edit, mix and master all at the same time then you’re taking on too much. Collaboration is key, and you should try to find strengths to your weaknesses from people around you.

What’s coming next for Georgia Meek?  

I’ve got a couple of really big collaborations this year with some household names but that is all I can say for now! Apart from that it’s festival szn baby! And then we’re headed out on the Cheaper Than Therapy tour in September (tickets on sale now for London, Brighton, Manchester, Guildford and Leeds!)
