Multi-Hyphenate Talent Roosevelt Gets Back To Basics On Immersive New Album ‘Embrace’

If you’re a fan of electro-pop music, multi-instrumentalist Roosevelt is an artist that needs to be on your radar. The German multi-instrumentalist – whose real name is Marius Lauber – first made waves in 2013 with his debut EP ‘Elliot’. Since then, Roosevelt has crafted an immersive music catalogue that spans different genres. In addition to his original work, the young talent has worked with some of the industry’s biggest artists – like Taylor Swift, Glass Animals and CHVRCHES. On 22 September, Roosevelt ushered in his new music era with his fourth album, ‘Embrace.’ Recorded across various Airbnbs in New York, Barcelona, and Los Angeles, the 10-track record sees Roosevelt on a journey of self-discovery – embracing his present and letting go of stressful expectations. With his new album currently making the rounds, we spoke with the ‘Ordinary Love’ artist about all things ‘Embrace,’ his creative process for the record and his remix of Swift’s track ‘Anti-Hero.’

Heya Roosevelt! Thanks for sitting down with SPINDLE. How did the summer months treat you?

Summer has been great! I’ve been to the South of France a lot and enjoyed some off time, while also working on a new studio room and preparing to record for the next record in 2024.

Congratulations on your new album, ‘Embrace’! How does it feel to have completed your fourth album?

It feels great! The time between finishing the record and releasing it has been pretty short this time, which is always amazing as the music still feels fresh.

We hear you wrote, recorded and produced this entire record yourself. Can you take us through the creative process for ‘Embrace.’ How did you navigate juggling so many hats?

That’s what I’ve been doing for 10 years now, so it’s not something I think about too much anymore. Making music to me always meant having full control over the production as well, and recording instruments by myself is still the essence of this project – it all started more or less as an experiment to see if that would work. And I want to keep that approach as it still feels inspiring to me.

Was there a particular challenge that you found difficult to overcome?

I’ve recorded the album in numerous places around the world, so one of the main challenges was how to convert different rooms into a small studio setup. For example, it became a challenge to make the same microphone sound identical in different rooms. So, in some of the tracks, continuity became a problem, similar to a film setting.

Regarding the lyrical content of the album, how does it differ from your previous releases?

What themes or stories did you feel inspired to talk about this time around?I’ve chosen ‘Embrace’ first as a working title – it was at the time of writing the first demos, and I remember that I’ve felt a strong re-connection with the euphoria and joy that surrounded the very first Roosevelt recordings.

We need to discuss your track ‘Paralyzed.’ Absolutely fantastic! What was the inspiration behind the single?

I’ve heard this french-house inspired sample in a café – it’s actually a big inspiration for me to catch a little bit of something on low volume in a busy environment and then formulate your own version of it. 


At what point was this song created in your creative process for ‘Embrace’?


I’ve had it done pretty early on! It was definitely one of the tracks that came together in a couple of days and where the song took over the control without me thinking about it too much, which is always the best case!


Outside of your new album. You have also been busy creating showstopping remixes for various artists in the industry, including one for Taylor Swift’s hit single ‘Anti-Hero.’ How did that collaboration come about?

I received a request from Taylor’s team, which was a really big honor. I think I only had a couple of days to finish it, and I was on tour then, so I rented out a studio and tried to nail it in just a few sessions. I’m still really happy with the result and humbled to be a small part of her album campaign. 



What type of sound or energy did you want to bring to the remix?

I always try to keep the whole vocal intact in a remix and just change its surroundings. My aim was to do a light, breezy disco track that lifted the song up and shifted it into a dancefloor tune. 


In addition to your new album, you’re going on tour later this year. What can fans expect from your upcoming batch of performances?

It will be the biggest tour I have done so far – both in length and the rooms I’m playing in… And I definitely took the production level higher to make it a unique experience. I’ve also added a lot of the new album to the setlist, so it’s going to be a lot of songs played for the very first time.

You have certainly been busy over the last few years. When thinking about the future, what short-term and long-term goals do you want to achieve?

My main goal for next year is to finish building my new studio and to work on new music in there. We’re also taking the headline show to various festivals next year, which will be super exciting.
