Hi Jann! Thanks for taking the time to chat to us, how’s your summer been?

Thank you! Summer’s been great! I had some time off, travelled a little, charged my batteries and got ready for the intense schedule coming up.

‘Arachnophobia’ is your latest release, can you tell us what this track means?

When I started working on it I was in a bit of a rut. I had some ideas but couldn’t really execute them. I was stuck. It took a lot of time, help, work and rest to get out of that state. I had to reevaluate my approach towards life, career and creative process. And ‘arachnophobia’ reflects that. Everybody functions using mechanisms and systems they’ve learned and developed over time in the environment they grew up in. Widening one’s scope requires openness to change and to relearn some of the patterns.

You’ve had a really interesting journey in music, starting out by performing at the National Opera in Warsaw. What made you decide to start making pop music in 2020?

I think I always wanted to do pop music. Growing up everything outside of school is extracurricular, additional. And because It’s not treated seriously by adults, kids don’t treat it seriously either. Luckily my parents always supported my passion and talent for music. They would let me skip school and prioritise gaining experience in arts. Opera was something that came along and I went with it, but didn’t pay much mind to it. I was only 12 years old so the only way I could’ve described it at that time was ’fun’. When I moved to Northern Ireland at the age of 16, I started studying music for my A-levels. This was the first time I realised that being an artist and a musician can be the main focus and not just a hobby. I started thinking more about what I want to do and what path I want to take. After leaving school I set my mind on pop music.

How do you feel your music has evolved from your first release in 2020, to now?

In almost every possible way lol. I always wanted to be a performer more than a composer and a songwriter. I only started writing songs to get myself on stage because nobody would do it for me. I didn’t create out of curiosity or need to get something out of the system. I stayed in my comfort zone a lot, both lyrically and musically. Throughout these 4 years, I’ve realised how much I’ve been holding myself back. How many of those patterns and systems I had to rewrite. I’m way more honest and daring in my music now. Creating became a pleasure and a purpose.

You recently came off tour supporting Madison Beer, how was that experience?

It felt unreal! I have loved Madison’s music since ‘life support’ so it was a huge honour to go on tour with her. I had a chance to share my music with so many new people. It was my first time doing such a big tour and even though it was a new and exhausting experience I felt so at home. I felt like I was made for this. Like I could do this for the rest of my life.

What does your writing process look like, any essentials or rituals?

Figuring out my process took me a long time. Especially when it came to writing. Nobody really taught me how to approach it so it took a lot of observation, studying, trial and error. Now, I like to treat my creative process as a whole. I believe that being an artist means paying attention to things people, for whatever reasons, usually don’t dwell on too much. And then conveying your emotions and observations. By any means possible. My main medium has always been music so I often start with that. It helps get out what’s inside me before I can verbalise it. Then, once I
lay out my emotions, I can lean into it. There are also a lot of thoughts and ideas I collect. I write them down in a notebook and expand, spiral into every possibility, everything that somehow in my mind connects to the subject at hand. After exhausting my imagination, I’m left with an essence of what I’m actually trying to convey.

Can you give any spoilers of what to expect from your upcoming music?

I would say I am the most open and honest I’ve been. I have grown so much and feel very confident. New music is going to be definitely more mature and explorative.

What do you hope your fans take away from your music when listening?

Emotions and thoughts. I want them to experience something.

And finally, can we catch you at any shows soon?

Yes! I’m going on tour in Europe! Starting on 15th of October in Hamburg.
