Meet Viral Alt-Pop Sensation April Jai

April Jai is a viral pop music superstar who is stepping into her truth and living life unapologetically. The young talent first embarked on her music journey after moving to London. With her stellar voice and captivating songwriting skills, April cultivated a dedicated following in both the local live music scene and on social media. In 2021, the emerging artist officially made her debut with the acoustic single ‘Me Too.’

Since that fateful day, April has continued to hone her talent and artistry, resulting in her latest music releases having a more pop, electronic and alternative sound. She has also expanded the scope of her songwriting, bringing fans immersive stories that tackle female empowerment, self-love, and sexuality. In May, April continued her upward trajectory by releasing her unapologetic single ‘WHY CHOOSE,’ an LGBTQIA+ summer anthem that sees her embrace her sexuality and explore different relationship dynamics.

When speaking on ‘WHY CHOOSE’, the ‘Morally Grey’ singer described it as a sort of coming-out song. “It’s the first one where I’ve talked openly about my bisexuality, which took a while to figure out even after being raised by queer parents,” she said in statement. We were able to chat with April about all things ‘WHY CHOOSE,’ Pride Month, her LGBTQIA+ icons, and so much more.

Heya, April Jai! Thanks for sitting down with Spindle.

Heyyy, thank you so much for having me!

Happy belated Pride Month! How did June treat you?

Thank you, same to you! June [was] literally incredible! It felt like such a fun and freeing month. I’ve [was] in NY and LA all month, so it’s been a wild adventure.

Speaking of Pride, we have to talk about your latest single, ‘WHY CHOOSE,’ it’s absolutely fantastic. Can you take us through the creative process for the record and your experience working with your longtime collaborator and producer, AMCL?

That’s so sweet, thank you, this was such a fun one to write. We made this song with two lovely people we’d never worked with before (Georgia Winter and Francesca Everly), and I definitely went into it a little nervous because my music tends to be quite spicy, and you never know how other collaborators are going to respond to that. Luckily, they were so up for it, and it ended up being a super fun day! Working with AMCL is also just so easy at this point, we’ve been working together for years so we have a shorthand which makes making music so easy.

One thing that makes this song so amazing is its unapologetically queer lyrics. What was your writing experience like for this track? Did you find it liberating discussing your bisexual identity so candidly on the record? Did you face any challenges?

I had been confused about my sexuality for such a long time before writing this song, but I feel like writing “WHY CHOOSE” really opened up my eyes to finally identifying as bisexual. I really owe my coming out story to this song and the whole process of writing it.

‘WHY CHOOSE’ is definitely part of the LGBTQIA+ anthem club, joining the likes of Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself’ and Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way.’ How does it feel to have a song that could potentially help other members of the community feel more comfortable in their identity?

Omg, thanks so much, those are such bangers! It makes me feel so incredibly honoured to know that this song could help anyone in any way possible. The aim of my music is always to make my listeners feel their most empowered, confident self, so those definitely go hand in hand.

Aside from ‘WHY CHOOSE,’ Is there a song or album that you refer to as your LGBTQIA+ anthem?

There are so many! ‘Born This Way’ by Lady Gaga is for sure a classic, but also I’ve been loving ‘She Calls Me Daddy’ by King Mala and ‘girls girls girls’ by Fletcher.

Who were some of your gay icons growing up?

I feel super lucky to have grown up with a queer mum so from a young age I always knew that no matter who I ended up with or was attracted to, I’d be accepted and loved and that makes her an icon to me!

Since 2021, you’ve been on an upward trajectory within the music sphere, releasing hit songs like your viral single ‘Morally Grey.’ How have you grown as an artist since your debut on the scene?

Omg SO much! I feel like a completely different human being. I’ve done so much growing in my personal life, and I definitely feel like that has bled into my songwriting. I’m so much more sure of myself and my vision, and I just know exactly what I want to say now.

What else can fans expect from April Jai in 2025?

The hottest, most confident music ever and some super exciting shows that I can’t wait to announce!

Lastly, what are five goals you want to achieve in the next five years? It can be professional or personal.

Ugh, I LOVE this question, I could probably list hundreds!

3. Move house (without roommates hahah)

4. Hear one of my songs out in the world

5. Play my bucket list venues (The Greek, Red Rocks, Royal Albert Hall)
