Spindle Look: Maverick Sabre ‘When I Wake Up’

Maverick Sabre is an artist that does more that just sing and write songs— he tells stories.

His new album, released 22 March 2019, is a collection of personal records that Sabre has been collecting for the past two years. The Album Explores themes surrounding love, war, hope, faith, society, and much more through its emotionally charged beats and lyrics.

He quotes that the album “holds the messages and feelings that I am inspired by,” thus creating a genuine aura that fans can really feel connected to.

Sabre describes the importance of the visuals behind ‘When I Wake Up’ as an integral part of the record’s identity, pronouncing that it shares “untold stories of the world around me and what goes on inside my head.” It delves into topics related to domestic abuse and reveals unspoken confessions he has identified by way of his Irish roots.

Describe the creative process behind ‘When I Wake Up.’ What was the meaning behind it?

Each album of mine is like a diary entry in my life. My first album ‘Lonely Are The Brave’ the sentiment in the title was where I was at at 19/20. My 2nd album ‘Innerstanding’ was a time in my life where I was finding myself truly. And ‘When I Wake Up’ represents a point in my life where I feel woken up to a lot of things within me and in the world around me.

Your songs are so diverse; ‘Into Nirvana’ is so unique and has a vibey beat with its chilled melody and echoing vocals, while ‘Her Grace’ is more upbeat and euphoric. How would you describe your sound in 5 words?

Whatever comes to your mind.

What do you want to convey to listeners with this album? Are there any specific feelings or emotions you seek to evoke?

I want people to be taken away while listening to the album. I never want to tell people how to exactly feel, I just wanted to create something that zones the listener out and creates a movie in their mind. Whatever that movie is down to whatever space you get into when listening.

The music video for ‘Slow Down’ is an incredible piece of artistry. Describe the thought behind creating a “film” type music video, along with the meaning of the storyline…

Rashid Babiker directed the video, and really it was all from his mind from the start. I played him the song and he had the vision straight away. The story is meant to reflect how common it is we pass people in everyday settings and they’re going through the same issues we are. The video is supposed to be a dreamy world you’re taken away to for a moment in the running of the album.

‘Slow Down’ features Jorja Smith. What was it like working with her?

I’ve been working with Jorja since she was 16 and first came to London. She’s my little sister and we write very similarly and are inspired by similar melodies so working with her is always easy.

How have your past experiences shaped your work?

In every way. I put my experiences and life into every song. That’s why I make music.

You are set to go on your first headline tour in 5 years, with many of your shows already being sold out. What can fans expect from your upcoming tour?

The best of all 3 albums, I’ve grown as a performer and vocalist as the years have come on and I’m really excited to show fans what we have in store for them.
