Your mixtape I V M E R I N is insane! What went into the production for the project?
Thank you! This project wouldn’t have made the light of day without the collaboration of some very talented friends and a million late nights/early mornings. I put my everything in to this!
Talking Drum is your latest single, and the visuals for the track are just out of this world, can you walk us through the concept for the video?
Ayyy! I’m really pleased with it all and my collaboration with director Almass Badat. The visual depicts my 10 year journey as Alxndr London, delving into my Yoruba heritage. I’m surrendering all to the process; a bridge has been built and I’m gradually making my way to the other side.
Your projects I V M E R I N and 2023 took us on two different journeys sonically, what elements make up your sound?
Ahhh. I love it all. It’s not complex. I’m really inspired by all and everything. I’m a multifaceted being on a quest, with each release I want to document how far I have come.
When you’re writing songs, what do you look towards for inspiration?
It’s all about my journey.
What was it like performing at Afropunk 2019 in Brooklyn?
I have no words. I’ll never get over how beautiful it is to witness thousands of Black people gathering to celebrate us.
Is there an album that inspired you to pursue your craft?
Lauryn Hill and that album changed everything for me. The Soulquarian neo soul/alt hip hop collective spun my mind too. I love George Clinton, with his out of this world Black excellence and Lily Allen with her original London flavour too.
What type of impact would you like your music to have on listeners?
If it moves you, I’m happy 🙂 Safe. X
