Emerging artist Maximillian is an R&B-Pop act that needs to be on everyone’s radar. Hailing from Copenhagen, the 20-year-old singer’s passion for music started at a young age. It wasn’t until attending a Pink Floyd concert at 13 that he realized he wanted to perform. The blossoming singer-songwriter wasted not time and begun working tirelessly on his craft finding his unique and personal voice in the process. Making his debut in 2017 with the electro-R&B track ‘Higher’, the rising artist continued to release emotional and raw singles, leading up to his debut EP ‘Ripples’. After ending 2019 with a bang, we can’t wait to see what else Maximillian has in store for 2020.

We got to chat with him about everything from his creative process, ‘On My Mind’, and so much more…

What is your favourite aspect of creating music?

That I can be as free as I want to while doing it, I love making music. It’s not only fun when you come up with something you think is great – it’s also challenging and educational. It’s the ways you can open up for so many thoughts you never thought you had.

When did you realize that you wanted to pursue music?

Honestly, I’ve always wanted to do it since I was very young! But growing up, I had some difficulties with some “friends” I shouldn’t had hung out with. I made a lot of mistakes, and it took me to a level of distress until I was at rock bottom. It was at this moment, at a Pink Floyd concert with my dad, I realized I wanted to change my ways and become a musician. Stop whatever I was doing and follow my heart and guts.

On My Mind’ is such a fun-loving song! How did the track come to be?

Funny story actually, I was really sick that day, I was in London on a writing trip, and I was on my way to a session with two amazing guys – Phill Cook & Johnny Latimar. On my way there, I couldn’t get the melody out of my head; it was just stuck. But I kept telling myself that it was too poppy for the vibe I wanted to roll with that day, so I ended up not recording it on my phone. But anyway, I came to the session, and we sat for hours upon hours and tried pushing out a song – that sometimes happens, unfortunately. So we didn’t have anything, and I felt so bad at this point. I really wanted something done, but I couldn’t remember the melody from earlier. I looked like the Gringe at that point, and the guys were starting to tell me to go home. Eventually, I hummed the melody, and both guys went ballistic over it. I only wrote a few lines that day, and then finished it up here in Denmark with my two pals -Marco Alexander Twellmann Zara & Karl-Frederik Reichardt.

Is there and album or genre that fuels your creativity?

I’m really loving this new minimalistic pop genre that’s been growing lately, even though I’m a sucker for a big and dramatic pop universe. Genres that fuel me creatively speaking would be Soul/R&B, Indie, Triphop, Electronic & POP(Ofc)!

How do you get in the headspace to write new songs?

Sometimes I don’t, to be honest, it comes to me when it comes to me. Most of the time, when I write new stuff and personal songs, I’m either doing the dishes or taking a bike ride through the city. I need to be a part of my environment, to be able to really dig deep in my emotions. That’s when the best songs come to life.

If you weren’t pursuing music, what would you be doing instead?

Probably bartending, I’ve always thought bartenders were the coolest.

What are your top three goals you want to achieve as an artist?

1. Success

2. Great experiences

3. Play at Madison Square Garden
