Meet Emerging Talent Killertunes
Nigerian producer and songwriter Killertunes is an emerging talent on the AfroBeats scene and ready to shake things up. Hailing from Benin City, Killertunes has already worked with names such as Mr Eazi and Wizkid. His new EP, ‘Gbedu + Things’, is his first solo body of work and was released at the end of last year.
We got to chat with Killertunes about everything from his earliest music memory, influences, 2020 plans and more…
How did you decide on your name Killertunes?
The name “Killertunes” came from my friends back in the day, it came at a time when I started working in a recording studio back in Benin city Nigeria, whatever new beats I played for my friends & colleagues were incredibly fire. The name just came through.
What was your earliest music memory growing up in Benin City?
That would be listening to songs at home with my family on a Saturday morning. My parents are music lovers, so dad had like a vintage console record player, I listened to legends like Fela, Victor Uwaifo, Sunny Ade, Majek Fashek, Bob Marley & many more.
Who are some of your musical influences?
My musical influences are Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Sarz, and Diplo.
Does your upbringing and Nigerian cultural influence the music you make?
Yes, big time.
Your EP ‘Gbedu & Things’ is such a solid body of work, what was your goal when creating each track?
I just wanted to make something different from what is the trend in Africa right now.
‘Alhaji Riddim’ is my favourite right now, is there a track that you enjoyed making the most?
Yeah, I enjoyed working on 11:11, working on the track, getting my saxophonist and guitarist to work with me on it was fun, working on the Gbedu, and things project was fun.
You’ve worked with Mr Eazi and Wizkid on ‘Doyin’ and ‘Ghetto Love’, respectively. What was it like to work with them? How did you end up collaborating?
I have worked with Mr Eazi and Wizkid on numerous songs, and it’s always amazing working with these guys.
What can fans expect musically from Killertunes in the months to come?
My fans should expect more music from me, and come 2020 am officially unveiling my Label and introducing two artists and two incredibly talented producers to the world.
