Meet ‘Friends Like These’ Artist Jack Gray
Jack Gray’s musical talent is in his blood. While he comes from a family with an array of musical experiences, Jack shows his skill in his own right with a catchy indie-pop sound and honest, open lyrics. His newest single, ‘Friends Like These,’ comes with a music video that complements what Jack does best; taking an emotionally vulnerable topic lyrically and turning into something upbeat and fun.
We were able to chat with Jack Gray about everything from his musical upbringing, EP ‘Nights Like This’ and so much more…
What is an early memory that inspired you to pursue music?
I fell in love with music at a super young age. The earliest memories that really stick with me are jamming with my dad after dinner. That’s how I learned to play the guitar, and it’s probably the reason I do what I do.
With such a musically-involved family, do you still look to them for advice and guidance?
For sure! They’re definitely the first people I turn to for advice on anything! Plus I actually write a lot of songs with my parents… Whenever I’m working at home, we sit in my room, and I’ve found that I can bounce idea’s off them really well.
You are an instrumentalist, producer, and singer! How do you juggle these three talents when creating new music?
Well, they all go hand in hand… I honestly couldn’t do one without the other. I feel like in this day and age, there are so many incredibly talented people that you have to be able to make shit happen for yourself, or you will get left behind…
Your 2019 EP ‘Nights Like This’ is fantastic! What was the creative process like for the record?
Thank you so much! That EP for me was the culmination of 2 years of writing and figuring out myself as a songwriter and producer. I traveled around the east coast of Australia a lot in that time with my little production set up and wrote songs everyday! The process was very experimental, and I really took my time with it all.
Some of your songs have touched on some pretty intense topics like depression and suicide. How do you get in the headspace to write such heavy material?
Well, growing up in the town that I did, I saw a lot of people around me affected by depression, and I felt like it was something I needed to talk about. Plus, I get bored of singing about the same things all the time…
Your latest single ‘Friends Like These’ is a banger. Is this track based on a particular person?
Thanks 😀 It sure is.. I won’t say who, but I will say be careful who you trust lol.
You’ve toured with Dean Lewis in the past, what was that experience like?
It’s always so great! He’s been so supportive, and I’ve learned so much from watching his journey! He’s shown me truly how hard we have to work to get where we want to go. Plus, we have mad times.
Lastly, what do you have planned for this year? An album or EP release?
Yeah, I have my first album, which I’m in the middle of recording coming out! Plus loads of touring, hopefully all around the world. Should be a dope year 🙂
