Billie Eilish And Lizzo Win Big At Last Night’s Grammys

The 62nd Grammy Awards aired on Sunday and brought with it plenty of grief, surprise, and newly set records.

The ceremony was held at the Los Angeles Staples Center, the home court of the L.A. Lakers. This sharpened the feelings of tragedy surrounding the death of player Kobe Bryant, who passed in a helicopter crash along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna earlier that day. Fans of the basketball star gathered outside the Staples Center during the awards show, and several celebrities, including Alicia Keys, Lizzo, and Lil Nas X, paid tribute to him when they took the stage.

Billie Eilish was the big winner of the night, taking home five of the six awards she was nominated for, including Album of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year, Song of The Year, and Best New Artist. Not only is Billie the youngest artist to win both Record of the Year and Album of the year, but the first artist to sweep all the Big Four categories since Christopher Cross in 1981.

Finneas O’Connell, Eilish’s brother and producing partner, likewise took home five awards, including Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, and Best-Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

R&B-Pop sensation Lizzo secured three wins, for Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best Pop Solo Performance.

This year’s Grammys faced a bit of controversy that is typical with award shows, with many accusing the Grammys of lacking diversity in their winners. Most notably, the CEO of the Recording Academy Deborah Dugan was placed on leave shortly before the awards show. While the Recording Academy maintains that this is due to Dugan’s poor behavior towards her staff, Dugan claims she was ousted for her attempts to change a sexist and corrupt system of picking nominees and winners. Dugan was the company’s first female CEO and had only been working at this position for five months.

The 2020 Grammy Awards however did have diversity in their nominations. Recognizing prominent female artists, including nominees Lana Del Rey, Ariana Grande, and Beyonce besides the night’s major winners. Yet the consensus among Academy members, artists, and fans alike seems to be that more work needs to be done by the time the 63rd Grammy Awards roll up next year.
