Meet The Charismatic Kodie Shane
Unapologetic, assertive, and engaging are three ways to describe emerging talent Kodie Shane. Making her debut in 2016 with her EP ‘Zero Gravity’, the young artist is steadily making music that expertly blends the genres of hip hop, R&B and trap music. Having amassed 64 million streams and views and working with some of hip hop’s biggest acts, including Lil Yachty and Trippie Redd, Kodie Shane is gearing up for a music takeover unlike any other!
We got the chance to chat with the young entertainer about the moment she fell in love with hip hop, advice she would give to other upcoming LGBTQ+ artists and more…
Let’s take it back a bit. Do you remember the exact moment you fell in love with hip hop?
Yes! Ashanti’s self-titled album “Ashanti” the track “Always on Time’. Featuring JaRule” dropped in 2002. I was about five years old, and it’s all I played on my little Sony walkman all day everyday!
Did you always know you wanted to be a rapper?
I always knew I would be an entertainer, always loved performing; music chose me. Still today I wouldn’t label myself as solely a rapper, I’m a singer and songwriter as well, but I believe what sets me apart is my love of entertaining and performing. I’m most comfortable on stage, in front of the camera, on the mic, in the studio… wherever the performance is happening
How would you describe your sound and style?
I would describe my sound and style as BIG. In my opinion, its the first time something like this has happened. It’s new, it’s fresh, it’s feel-good or feels sad, as long as you feel, it’s BIG!
You’ve worked with some of hip hop‘s hottest acts. How has linking up with them so early on in your career helped with your craft?
It’s always a blessing when you can watch your peers set an example of what to do and what not to do and hopefully learn from their mistakes and successes. Plus, I’ve had a lot of fun along the way!
How do you navigate being a queer woman in hip hop? Were there any roadblocks or challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t navigate being a queer woman in hip hop any differently than just being a woman in hip hop. Yes, there are challenges, life serves up challenges daily. I keep my eye on the journey, enjoy the process, and I don’t take the obstacles or challenges personally
What advice would you give to other up and coming LGBTQ+ artists rising up in the game?
Be true to yourself at all times, believe in your talents, and lead with Love!
Your new track, “No Rap Kap,” is an absolute banger! What was the creative process like for the record?
Trippie Redd and I are genuine friends, and we have a ton of creative chemistry! The studio is supernatural for us, it’s basically a Good fucking time! Once there’s a beat that speaks to us both, we just let it flow from there.
You’re currently on tour with Trippie Redd. How has the tour been going so far?
This tour has been absolutely crazy! Every single city thus far has been Fye! The fans are ready to turn up, and we goin there, We Going Braaazzzyyy!!! If you’re fortunate enough to catch the show, be ready to lose your mind!
Something I can’t get enough of is your ‘YoungHeartThrob record (‘Shut Up’, ‘Pull Up,’ and High Speeds’ are my favorites at the moment) Will you be releasing a new album or EP this year?
You ask a Great question!! Yes, and Yes!! In fact, this month (Feb), I’ll be dropping an EP that I’m super excited to share.’
How will your new music differ from your previous records?
The difference in my new music is simple, Maturity. Every time I step in the booth to record, I’m growing and experimenting.
