Meet The Powerful Singer-Songwriter Taylor Janzen
Taylor Janzen isn’t afraid to get deep as a songwriter. During her childhood, the songstress struggled with expressing her feelings. But as time went on, Taylor used songwriting as a way to express herself and inner thoughts. The Canadian-born musician’s focus on guitar and vocals brings out her emotional and soulful lyrics. Taylor is set to have an eventful 2020, which includes a tour, numerous festival performances, and new releases on the horizon.
We got to chat with Taylor Janzen about everything from her top three musical influences, touring with beabadoobee, and so much more…
Who are your top three musical influences?
Brandi Carlile, mewithoutYou, Maggie Rogers.
How old were you when you realized you wanted to pursue music?
It’s honestly always been all I’ve wanted. I’ve had complete focus on music since I can remember. Pretty sure I decided I was a musician while I was still in the womb haha.
What are you most looking forward to about your tour with Beabadoobee?
I’m really excited to properly tour the US for the first time! I’m also stoked to be able to tour with another incredible female artist that I can listen to every night and be inspired by.
What was the process like in creating your new single ‘I Feel Darkness?’
It was really surprising, actually. It was the kind of song that kinda just spilled out unexpectedly. The idea hit me while I was driving one night, and I wrote it while trying to speed home so I wouldn’t forget the idea.
The video for the single is so magical and amazing! How did you come up with the concept for the visuals?
Well, the song is about depression and how terrifying and haunting it can feel to know you’re slipping into another rough patch. The video is supposed to capture how dark and isolating it can feel, but also how you can take that darkness and create something beautiful with it.
Before this single, you’ve put out two EP’s. How do you feel you’ve grown as an artist since the start?
I’ve grown so much in the last few years, especially with my songwriting. I’ve been able to collaborate a lot more in the last year, which has opened up my creative world a lot and helped me explore sounds I’ve never thought to use before.
You have quite a bit of traveling set up for this year, from an American tour to a few festivals here in the UK. Is there anyone spot you’re most excited to visit?
I’m really excited to go to Brighton for the great escape festival! I’ve been there a couple of times, and it’s genuinely one of my favourite places in the world.
What does it mean to you to be able to use songwriting as an outlet?
It means everything. Without songwriting as an outlet, I don’t know where I’d be. Art is such a cool way to take something that feels shameful and turn it into something you’re proud of.
