After dropping her critically acclaimed EP ‘In Gold’, Delilah Montagu is ready to deliver new music that follows her journey of self-discovery. Her new single ‘Version Of Me’ follows the 22-year-old’s journey – opening up her mind, heart, and soul in the process. Before COVID-19 changed the world, Delilah found herself in sunny California, tackling her worries head-on with the talented producer Robin Hannibal. The days spent in L.A. helped the songstress find her missing spark and inspired her new batch of music. With newfound confidence and vulnerability, Delilah Montagu is ready to shine and thrive in the music sphere whole-heartedly.

We were able to chat with the songstress about everything from her intimate new single, the creative process for the her video and so much more…

Let’s first dive into your new single ‘Version Of Me’. It’s absolutely fantastic! How did this track come to be?

Thank you! I wrote ‘Version of Me’ about not being able to find the right words to use to talk about how I feel. It’s ended up being a very pivotal song because for a long time I wanted to find all the right words to speak honestly about how I was feeling, but through writing about not knowing what to say, and not knowing what It was I was feeling, it freed me up to write in a more vulnerable way and let go.

Your video for the record is so creative with the way it’s edited and shot. Can you take us through the creative process for the visual? What do you want music listeners to take away after watching?

I made this video with friends of mine, all women. In fact a lot of the strongest women I know! My good friend Florence Kosky directed and came up with the idea and I decided I wanted to visually incorporate 4 of my friends’ artworks into the video. The video is raw and strong and I hope people get a better sense of who I am as a person through watching it.

What type of advice would you give fans that are dealing with feeling lost or not themselves?

For me, it has been important to acknowledge my emotions. When I deny myself feelings like unhappiness or not knowing who I am I tend to feel even more shame. The most important thing for me is self-compassion and forgiveness

Lets take it to the beginning, whats your earliest music-related memory?

I remember being at my grandmother’s house and finding her CD of Joni Mitchell and playing it over and over again, then rushing to the piano in her living room and trying to imitate what I had just heard…Joni was inspiring me to play music even at that age of 6!

Is there a specific moment in which music has helped you and your life journey?

Music has always been a way for me to express how I feel music is always been a way for me to figure out how I’m feeling usually I find it really hard to talk and express what’s going on and when I write it seems to come out naturally that has helped me more times than I can count I think music and save my life.

When it comes to writing music, what is your favourite aspect of the process? What is your least favourite?

This is a funny question because my answer to it will be different depending on the day that I’m asked. Last night I was writing about how I feel about what’s going on in the world at the moment politically, and the lyrics just came through me as an expression of my viewpoint, so last night my favourite aspect was the lyrics. When I wrote Version Of Me, the lyrics and the melody both came at the same time and I loved writing them both. It was a strong vibe lyrically and musically from the start.

How have you been faring in a COVID-19 run world? Have you picked up new hobbies or had any musical awakenings?

I was in LA recording music when corona happened, so I got a flight straight back to London then drove straight back home in the countryside reconnecting with nature where I grew up. I grew up in the forest so it feels like I’m returning to my roots. It’s been a beautiful time full of change – I think being forced to stop has been a positive experience for me.

Looking ahead, what can fans expect from Delilah Montagu in the coming months?

MUCH MORE MUSIC. An autobiographical journey through my experiences and feelings, in the form of songs. I’m very excited.
