Introducing Daniel Blume, The Music Industry’s Next Big Talent
Daniel Blume is an expert song creator that needs to be on your radar. The Dublin-born, London-based artist first got his start in the industry as a classically trained musician. Blume attended the Yehudi Menuhin School – earning a scholarship from The Rolling Stones – and was awarded the BBC’s Young Composer of the Year award. With a classical career path in his future, Daniel abruptly changed his destiny and focused on the electronic music world.
Since then he has amassed an impressive catalogue and worked with some of music’s hottest artists – including Ella Henderson, Cheat Codes and more. With his brand new EP ‘You Gave Me A Title, I Made A Song’ making the rounds, Daniel is showing no signs of slowing down his music take over.
We were able to chat with him about his new single ‘Kardashian’, his classical background and more. Read our full interview below…
When you think of dance music genre what is the first thought that comes to mind?
I love to party and that’s always the mood and feeling dance music gives me. Nothing better than when it’s just love for the people around you and you’re all just lost in the moment screaming along to your favourite lyrics.
What was the first instrument you ever learned?
I started off with the classical guitar when I was 4.
Which lessons or training methods from your time at Yehudi Menuhin School do you still use today?
It’s mostly just the combination of the broad musical knowledge I gained there that still has a huge impact on how I make music right now. Whether it’s writing chords at the piano, or thinking up melodies, it’s the thing that comes most naturally to me in the process and something I try to make sure I don’t take for granted.
When you were in your teens it seemed that you were walking down the career path of classical music. When did that change to electronic and dance?
I was always set on writing my own music, but when I was 15 I heard Martin Garrix’s record animals for the first time and that changed everything for me. I couldn’t believe that he was just a couple years older than me and he’d made a hit on a laptop in his bedroom. That blew my mind and totally flipped my dreams and what I thought was achievable and from then on it’s been head down grafting for the same kind of success.
What’s your favourite aspect of making tracks with other producers?
I love collaboration in general. I think when you’re just yourself working on something you can get really caught up in things that are pretty much irrelevant and do a lot of overthinking whereas when you’ve got somebody to bounce ideas off you tend to steer clear of getting stuck because when one of you isn’t sure or can’t make a decision the other can step in and bring something from their side to the table. It’s a dope process.
Will we be getting a visual for ‘Kardashian’?
You bet! It drops the same day as the song and it’s totally wild I can’t wait for everybody to see it! Really plays off the fun side to the song.
How have you been handling this wild ride of a year so far?
There’s been ups and downs like I’m sure there has been for everybody. It really sucked at first when all shows were cancelled and the possibility of touring was written off but then I got my head straight and said to myself that I wanted to look back at this year and period of time with pride knowing that I used this odd blessing in disguise to create some of my best music that otherwise wouldn’t have been made and although it’s been tough that is what I think I’ve achieved so there have been positives in that sense.
What’s next for Daniel Blume music? Are we getting an EP or album?
Well I’m super excited to be dropping this EP right now. It’s so awesome to finally be able to drop a body of work all at once; that’s always been a big dream of mine. But yeah..long term goal is definitely an album with a bunch of things in there that people wouldn’t expect from me. But for the short term future, we’ve got some really cool singles to follow this EP!
