Since that fateful day, the couple have released an array of dynamic singles that have captured the attention of music lovers around the world. Within their multilayered tracks, Cande and Paulo showcase their undeniable chemistry and dynamic musicality. Their latest release, ‘Tuyo’, continues to display their unique artistry to the fullest. With the release of ‘Tuyo’, Cande y Paulo give the Narcos theme song a new twist, evoking a sense of mystery and intrigue.

With ‘Tuyo’ making the rounds, and their debut album set for a summer release, Cande y Paulo, are an emerging duo that’s ready for music stardom. We were able to chat with the two artists about everything from the origin of their relationship, their forthcoming album, and so much more. Read the full interview below.

Heya Cande y Paulo, thanks for sitting down with us.

How has your year been going for you so far?

Fortunately we are well thanks, we are lucky that we are both able to adapt quite quickly to changing situations. To be honest, we think most musicians are the same… We have a life time of training for crazy and unexpected scenarios. 

Let’s dive into the music. When did you individually decide that you wanted a career in music?

Cande: Honestly I don’t know, it just happened. I never had that moment where I thought I want to do this for work even though unconsciously I probably really wanted to. It just flowed. There were particular and consequential events, for instance discovering the double bass was decisive.

Paulo: I started very young, at around 6 or 7 years old. My parents encouraged me to learn piano when I asked them to find me a piano teacher. I had seen a piano in a store and it was love at first sight… haha.

When looking back to your childhood, what genre’s type of music did you surround yourself with?

Paulo: I studied classical music and around the age of fourteen I started playing blues and rock. After that I opened up to many different genres including tango, folkloric music and flamenco. I loved studying and would play the whole day every day.

Cande: My mother used to sing all the time, she surrounded herself by music. The CD in the car never changed until my sister and I knew every lyric to every song on our way to school. If we liked one song in particular we would play it over and over and over again. That’s actually how I got into it on my own since I was young, I would write down the lyrics no matter what language it was in (please imagine what that would have been like: dontnou guai o blaqueipis hahaha)… It would be afternoons of deciphering and more and more I would fall deeper into the music.

Can you take us through the origin story of Cande y Paulo? How did you two end up becoming a music duo?

We knew each other for years and played together a few times at different points. It really came together however when Cande started playing the double bass. That is when we decided to commit to being a duo and to the type of music we make.

How would you describe your sound?

We strive to make simple music with a lot of depth as we believe music is more powerful through its simplicity rather than complexity. Jazz and minimalism started us upon this journey and recording our debut album with Larry Klein acted as a catalyst. He understood what we were trying to achieve and was able to guide us, giving us everything we needed to fulfil that vision. It was really special meeting Larry, he is a great human being as well as being a great producer.

You just announced the release date for your debut album. What can fans expect from this forthcoming album?

New versions of songs from songwriters and composers from around the world, across different genres and from different eras in our very own style. We did everything we could to keep alive the original spirit of these songs.

With a busy year ahead, what are five goals you are looking to accomplish? 

To play live and tour. We would love to collaborate with other artists and musicians from  around the world, from different walks of life and different cultures. Compose and arrange our own music which we are working on. Continuously work and improve on our sound and continue to study and grow
