Introducing The Uplifting Singer-Songwriter… evrYwhr

If you’re in need of music with positive lyricism and an eclectic R&B-soul sound then evrYwhr is the artist for you. Born and raised in Michigan, the singer-songwriter first fell in love with music at the age of 5. As a kid, his parents filled the household with an array of artists like New Edition, Curtis Mayfield and Michael Jackson. At age 9 the young talented began his journey as a singer which swiftly led to him scribbling his first song at 14.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in Sales & Business Marketing, the young talent reignited his music aspirations and moved to Los Angeles. evrYwhr quickly found success as a songwriter and began working with artists like Leona Lewis, Mila J and Aaron Carter. In 2013, his career reached new heights when he won a Grammy for his work on Lecrae’s gospel-rap album Gravity.

Over the years, his star has continued to rise with hit releases like ‘Positive Vibes’ and ‘Letter to the White House’ – which received critical acclaim and was used in numerous voting campaigns around last year’s Presidential election. Fast forward to 2021 and evrYwhr is continuing his upward trajectory with his latest single ‘Tie Dye’. Described as a track about self-love, the record and its accompanying video invite listeners on a journey of acceptance and positivity. We were able to chat with him about everything from his immersive songwriting, his love letter to Los Angeles and his inspiring reality TV show. Read the full interview below.

Hey evrYwhr! How’s October treating you so far?

It’s a beautiful month! I love Autumn.

You just dropped your video for ‘Tie Dye’ is absolutely fantastic – can you give us an insight into the creative process and how the video came to life?

The ‘Tie Dye’ music video is rooted in the elements of connection, love & freedom; sunflowers were used to symbolize a season of blooming. We filmed in Los Angeles, and though I’m originally from Michigan, the community I uncovered on the west coast has been a garden bed for my growth over the last 10 years. I’ve discovered deeper layers of my truth on the coastline where the ocean waves moulded my being like the shore, and one of the most beautiful things about this shoot were the moments captured with my family & friends; for the majority of us it was the first time we connected face to face since the pandemic hit. ‘Tie Dye’ was our homecoming.

Are there any key moments in your 10-year stay in LA that stick out to you the most?

Karaoke nights! I would spend each birthday sharing my love for Karaoke with friends; using strangers’ tables as the stage for my iconic performances of “Thong Song” & “Bye Bye Bye”. Nights I’ll never forget!

Let’s take it back to your childhood. What type of artists or albums filled your house growing up?

I remember as a baby, I would sit with my dad on the couch in our basement and listen to vinyl. Songs like Marvin’s – “After The Dance”, The Chi-Lites – “Oh Girl” & Curtis Mayfield – “Move on Up” led me to my own internal reservoir of joy. Music was ubiquitous, and the artform stuck with me as a way of expression; it gave me an opportunity to provide my unique voice of perspective to the greater collective.

We hear that before you started your musical journey, you attended university for Sales & Business Marketing. When did you realize that you wanted to make the switch from business to music?

The mission was always to be an Artist, I just didn’t grow up in an area where it was seen as realistic. Sales & Marketing is in everything we do as humans, so I figured acquiring that knowledge would assist in furthering my music career as well.

We need to show a spotlight on your incredible songwriting skills.  What’s your strategy when you approach creating a track – what comes first, the melody, title or lyrical content?

It’s interchangeable between developing a concept and discovering the melody as to which comes first. I rarely if ever come up with lyrics if there is no melody or concept.

Outside of music you are also starring in your own series Destination evrYwhr. How did this project come to be? What are most excited for fans to see?

I was approached by Transit Pictures to star in a music-focused travel show back in 2015 and I said yes. This opportunity was in alignment with my explorative nature and spoke to values I wanted to contribute to the world around me. I believe it’s important to travel so we can build a first-hand understanding and empathy for cultures outside of our own. 

We know that you are a busy man at the moment – with the new music video and your TV series. But can we expect an album or EP release soon?

Definitely! I’m currently working on a full-length project I’m looking forward to sharing come 2022.

With 2021 slowly coming to a close, what are you looking forward to the most in the coming months?

Quality time with my loved ones.
