Introducing The Emerging Alternative-R&B Powerhouse… Chanel Loren

We were first introduced to Chanel Loren earlier this year when we heard ‘Playlist’ and have become obsessed ever since. Born and raised in South-East London but residing in Sydney, the emerging songstress found solace in music at a young age. Throughout her childhood, Chanel immersed herself in the boundless worlds of music and dance. Her love for the arts continued during her time at London’s legendary BRIT School – which saw her expand her creative scope even further. Alongside her studies, Chanel began to look towards singers like Erykah Badu and Jill Scott for inspiration as she began her own journey as an artist.

However, her time at the BRIT School came to a screeching halt after the young talent and her mother left London and moved to Australia. Due to the drastic change of scencery and lack of friends and family, Chanel looked towards music for comfort – which resulted in her spending more time into producing her original songs. Fastforward to 2022 and Chanel has emerged as a full fledged artist that’s ready to open up to the world. With her second single ‘Disappear’ making the rounds, the talented artist is continuing to showcase her incredible and authentic talent. We were able to chat with Chanel about everything from her music beginnings, her latest single ‘Disappear’ and so much more. Read the full interview below.

Hi Chanel! Thanks for sitting down with SPINDLE.

Heyy SPINDLE, thanks for having me x

How has 2022 been for you so far? 

Busy to say the least but I am enjoying the movement of life after being still because of the pandemic.

Congratulations on releasing your latest track, Disappear! What was the creative process like for the record? 

The creative process actually happened across two different sessions. The first session created the foundation of the track a couple of years ago, and the second session with GXNXVS finalised and revamped the old idea.

Is there a specific theme or meaning you want listeners to take away after listening?

I want my listeners to get to know me! I hope that my music will resonate with people, helping them to express themselves through the songs.

The track’s accompanying video has such a 90s vibe to it. Was that your inspiration when filming the visual?

The 90’s/00’s will always be a subconscious inspiration for me. I knew I wanted the visuals to be in black & white and grungy – for the rest, I trusted Murli, the director’s, vision. 

I want to take it back to the beginning for a bit. When did you first realise you wanted to pursue music?

I’ve always wanted to be in the performing arts, but 17 was the age when I decided it was in the field of music, after moving to Australia.

Was there an album or artist that left a lasting impact on you growing up?

Graduation by Kanye West

Reeling it back into the present, how would you describe your sound for first-time listeners?

I’d prefer to let them decide haha

Looking ahead, what are five goals you want to achieve in your artistic journey? 

• Live performances
