Hi Nicky Youre! Thanks for sitting down with SPINDLE. As a California native, how have you been spending your summer?
Hi SPINDLE, thanks for having me! I started off my summer by going to Cabo for about a week, and now that I’m back, I’m making tons of music and preparing for live shows.
Before we talk about your recent release, let’s take it back to the beginning. What is your first music memory โ are you from a musical/creative family?
Not really – My dad used to be in a band way back in the day, but that was more for fun. Both my parents and my brother and sister have good singing voices, though. I think my earliest memory with music would be my brother learning guitar. The first song I ever downloaded and loved was “replay” by Iyaz.
What was the album or song you constantly had on repeat throughout your childhood?
For some reason, I listened to two Matisyahu songs like all the time. “One Day” and “King Without a Crown” were my favorite songs for a while. I also loved “Grenade” by Bruno Mars.
When did you realize you wanted to make your own music as an artist?
I don’t think I ever really fathomed making my own music till I was actually doing it with a friend. I always thought it would be so cool to be an artist as a kid, but before Spotify, I never imagined I’d actually be able to do it.ย
One day my friend asked if I wanted to, and I said yes. Once we started doing it consistently, even though the music we were making was terrible, the music-making process felt so good to me – I fell in love with making music pretty quickly.
When creating your signature sound, what genres or elements did you want to incorporate?
When I got into the pop music I loved, it was never straight down the middle pop. So I try to make my sound be pop + blending some other genre/subgenre. It helps me stay creative and not get overwhelmed by making the same stuff all the time.
Your track, ‘Sunroof’, has really taken off since its release, particularly on TikTok. How has it been seeing your second single receive so much love?
It’s an insane feeling to see so many people love and relate to something that I made. I almost didn’t even put this song out when I did because I was still figuring lots of things out. Sure glad I just trusted my gut and went with this song ๐
Your latest release, ‘Never Go Wrong’, is another fantastic track that is also on an upward trajectory. Can you take us through the creative process for the record? What message do you want fans to take away from the song?
I wrote that song with my friend David Hugo. We both love movies and wanted to make a song related to that. It kinda reminds me of a song that would play at the end of a 90s rom-com, which I love. I don’t think there’s a real message, I just want people to listen to it and feel like everything is good for the 2 minutes and 35 seconds of playtime.
With your latest tracks continuing to make the rounds, when can fans expect an album or EP release? Can you give us a sneak peek into what you’re working on?
I’ll have some new music out this year. We’re gonna start with some remixes of my song “Sunroof” and then release some more original music after that in the form of an EP. This should be coming pretty soon ๐
