Words Spindle

Nea is ready to take over the pop music landscape with her debut album ‘Transparent.’ Hailing from Stockholm, Sweeden, the young talent first got her start in the industry as a songwriter. Writing for the likes of Zara Larsson, Nea’s work generated over 2.5 billion streams – which resulted in her becoming one of the industry’s most sought-after creatives. After earning an incredible reputation as a songwriter, Nea set her sights on pursuing a career as a solo artist, with the release of her debut single ‘Some Say.’

Since stepping into the solo spotlight, Nea has wasted no time making international waves. From earning the Dance of the Year award at Spain’s LOS40 Awards to receiving various nominations at France’s NRJ Awards and Music Moves Europe Awards, the talented songstress has set the stage for an everlasting career. We were able to chat with Nea about her latest release ‘A Lover Like Me,’ her debut album Transparent, and so much more.

How’s it going Nea? Thanks for sitting down with SPINDLE!

Hey SPINDLE, thanks for having me! I’m really good, life is extremely busy at the moment, but it’s only because a lot of fun things are happening, so I’m pretty excited.

Can you believe we’re already in February? How has 2023 been treating you?

It’s crazy. But to be honest, I have a weird feeling that it’s already April or something because this start of the year has been so intense lol. In 2023 I’ve already recorded a 6 episode TV show, gigged, released the first single from my album and had a #1 TikTok song in Sweden & Norway. That’s not what the first month of my years normally looks like!

We adore your latest single, ‘A Lover Like Me’ – can you give us an insight into the creative process and how the track came to life?

Eyy that makes me so happy to hear. It was one of those rare songs that kind of ‘just happened’. I had an idea for the lyrics, and Daniel Ledinsky, who I wrote the song with, played a couple of chords (it’s literally two chords throughout the whole song), and 2-3 intense hours later, we had ‘A Lover Like Me!’ After that, we recorded my band live and live horns, so the process of finalizing the production obviously took a bit longer, though, as it always does.

Do you have a strategy when you approach creating your music – what comes first, the melody, title or lyrical content?

It depends, but I find that if I have a lyrical concept to start with it really helps me when writing. I have a theory that one should start with the bit that’s hardest in the process. Finding melodies and chords normally comes quite easy for me, so I try to spend more time on preparing lyric ideas.

You also released a dynamic music video for ‘A Lover Like Me.’ What themes are messages did you want to explore with the visual?

I feel like the song has a strong self love message with a playful/fun twist to it. So we literally just wanted to get that feeling across in the video too!

A Lover Like Me’ is taken from your upcoming debut album TRANSPARENT. What can fans expect from the forthcoming record?

Transparent is gonna be more raw and unpolished than my music has been earlier. Both in lyrics and sound. I love pop and I always aim to do music that people can connect with, but I want this album to be more ‘real’ in a sense. More transparent:) I’m sooo excited about it to be honest. I can’t wait to show you.

You first came onto the music scene with your first single ‘Some Say’ in 2019. How have you evolved as an artist and songwriter since then?

I feel like when I released ‘Some Say,’ I saw myself as a songwriter who tried to release music. It’s not until now really that I feel like I’ve figured out who I am as an artist and fully feel comfortable claiming the space as a songwriter AND an artist.

Did you always know that you wanted to pursue a career in music? When was your ah-ha moment that set you on your creative journey?

My dad always says I’ve always been all in on the things I do. As a kid, I was all in for horses and horse riding. As a young teenager, I was all in chasing boys. And from about the age of 16, I’ve been all in for music (which I’ve stuck to).

Is there an artist or album that has had a major influence on your artistry?

Omg many! I adore those early ’00 artists such as Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morrisette and The Cardigans. Right now, I’m the biggest fan of Sza and Khurangbin. But I’d say my all-time heroes are Rihanna and Ella Fitzgerald.

Looking ahead, what are five goals you want to achieve as a solo artist?

Great question! Let’s manifest.
