Meet Darin… The Swedish Pop Sensation Ready To Take The World By Storm

With more than half a billion streams to his name, eight number-one albums in Sweden, and multiple Swedish Grammy wins, Darin is a name everyone should know. Since entering the industry at age 14, Darin has been living out his dream and garnering a whole host of impressive accolades. Now primed for global domination, the star is stepping into his most authentic era of music, kicking things off with his newest single, ‘Electric’. Released via Helix Records, the synth-pop track is the perfect pick-me-up, brimming with catchy hooks, soaring melodies, and foot-tapping beats. We sat down with Darin to discuss his whirlwind career so far and what this new chapter means to him. Read our full interview below.

Hey Darin! Thanks for chatting with Spindle. How are you today?

I’m good, thanks! It’s been a busy weekend. We just released my new single, “Electric”, on Friday, and now I’m in Ireland chilling.

First things first, you just released your brand new single ‘Electric’. How does it feel to share it with the world?

It feels good and exciting! I feel like I’ve been preparing for it for a while now, with both the song and music video. You kind of live with the song for a while, just the two of you. And then all of a sudden, it’s out there, and people are reacting to it. 

How did the single come about, and what’s the story behind it?

Harris and Hurr, who produced it, had done a remix of another song of mine – “Can’t Stay Away” – and I actually ended up liking the version they did more than the original! So, I met with them and another writer, Jordan Shaw, in London, and this was the first song that we wrote together. I had the story, and we created the song from that, all in one day. The song is about a night out in Palma, Mallorca, where I live. It was one of those spontaneous nights with my closest friends, actually celebrating my birthday. And when I thought things couldn’t get better, I met someone special. We were like two magnets drawn to each other that night.

You started recording music and speaking to record labels at age 14. What was it like being in the industry from such a young age?

It has changed a lot! I was very eager at that age, and everything I was working towards was something I could only imagine but hadn’t experienced yet. I was super motivated though, looking back it feels like I had a “one track mind” when it came to the industry. I had great people around me, though, and I can’t underestimate how important that was (and still is!)

How do you feel your music has evolved over the years?

I have tried different genres and styles throughout the years. I always think my music is a reflection of what’s going on with me personally – it’s hard to separate the two. I’ve changed so much over the years, and so has the music. At one point I was doing Swedish folk music! Now I’m doing music people can dance to. But it’s what feels right in the moment.

Having scored eight number-one albums in Sweden, do you have a favourite release?

This is always a tough question! Because the style of music has changed so much, I have a lot of different favourites. But I guess I have a special place for my song “Holding Me More”, it feels very raw and honest and it’s a special feeling to sing it live.

When it comes to writing a song, what’s your creative process, and how do you get inspired?

I write about things that happen to me. When I’m in the studio, I don’t really know what I’m doing until we start. I always start with chords and then melodies and lyrics. When I first record the vocals, that’s when I know if the song feels right. 

‘Electric’ signals a new era for you creatively. How would you describe this new direction?

It’s energetic and uplifting, it’s free and colourful. I want to spread good vibes and positive feelings and hopefully make people want to dance to it.

Who would you love to collaborate with in the future?

I love Dua Lipa, it’s pop perfection! Give her my number.

What’s your favourite thing about performing, and do you have any shows coming up soon?

I feel more like myself than I ever do when I’m on stage. It’s a powerful feeling when you connect with people live with music. There’s nothing else like it. And yes, I have a summer tour with lots of dates in Sweden this summer, a few shows in Italy and we’re planning some more live dates for the fall – hopefully that will include London!

And finally, what does the future hold for Darin?

I honestly don’t know! I guess I feel like that’s out of my hands. I’m going to keep making music and hope that people enjoy it!
